99 golf trouble starting

Hi all I have a 1999 VW golf 2.0 and the only time I have trouble starting it is when I fill the tank up with gas. After I fill with gas I must hold the gas pedal down in order to start the car, once started I must then rev the engine for a bit or else the car with stall. After about 1 min of this the car is fine. I have no trouble starting the car any other time. Just looking for some info if any person has heard of this before I go off and get robbed at the mechanic.
Thanks

Re: 99 golf trouble starting

Are you squeezing as much as you can into the tank or trying to end up on a even dollar amount? You could be adding too much fuel & flooding the evaporative emmission devices. I've heard this problem before, if you're not overfilling there may be a bad valve (purge valve?), I can't remember right now which it was. Is your check engine light on?
