3rd gear grindage

car info: '90 civic hatch - '94 b18b1 motor / ys1 transmission

for a little background, ive gone through two trannies already and am on my third...if im right about this, feel free to flame the fuck out of me...

my transmission has been grinding in 3rd gear, just slightly, when i shift into it...i started thinking maybe it was because the clutch cable wasnt adjusted properly since this was the 3rd grinding transmission ive had, it couldnt just be shitty luck...so i go and adjust it a little bit, and now 3rd gear doesnt grind when i shift to it, but 5th gear does...

should i keep adjusting and eventually my problem will be solved, or is my tranny just screwed???

Re: 3rd gear grindage

Hmm damn dude, keep playin with it. My boy did the same on his integra. His other friend cut the cable short so he can have that "quick" shift. Which is totally bullshit. Anyways his gears started to grind crazy and it was harder to shift.

Re: 3rd gear grindage

I would recommend changing the fluid to that Synchromesh stuff if you aren'y using it already, that might help. You could also use some Lucas oil in there too, that should work. I got a used ys1 from a guy that said it grinded a little, I used a mixture Synchromesh and Lucas and I've never had a grinding problem. Just a thought. Also try adjusting the cable too.

Re: 3rd gear grindage

Yea i seen a thread in another site said to drain your tranny fluid and put new in use it and then drain it again..They said the cause was the shavings getting caught on the syncros or something when shifting and gives it a grind..Thats just what ive seen on forums so i dont know if it works..Good luck..

just so everyone know, Synchromesh is made by GM and you have to buy it at a dealership, its definaly the best tranny fluid made.

Re: 3rd gear grindage

I never saw Sychromesh at any Auto Zone, Advance Auto, Pep Boys or any local auto store by my house. I always had to get it at the dealership. Lucas Trans Oil works wonders too.

Re: 3rd gear grindage

syncromesh is the shit, but like said above the local autoparts stores here don't carry the penzoil, so i have to go to GM and they charge an arm and a leg...

the thing is though, the first transmission i had only lasted a few months because it got stuck in 4th gear, then my 2nd tranny wouldnt go into gear at all less than a month after i put it in...and since the grinding moved from 3rd gear to 5th gear i think if i adjust the clutch cable even more it shouldnt grind at all...but maybe im wrong

i guess part of my question should actually be: Could the adjustment of the clutch cable have anything to do with my transmission grinding a gear?

Re: 3rd gear grindage

yeah it has alot to do with it, if there is too much slack it will grind, Keep adjusting till you get it where it grinds the very least, or not at all.
