How to get the CEL code?

I have a 2002 Trailblazer
My check engine light is on.
I want to know what CEL code it's throwing.
How do I get the vehicle to display the code?

Thanks

If the TrailBlazer could tell you what the actual problem is through the D.I.C, that would be cool. However, I don't think that it does....

If you still have Onstar activated, you can hit your button & ask them to do an on board diagnostic check for you. They can give you the code of the problem(s) & then you can call up your local dealer & ask there if Onstar doesn't know the exact problem.

Another thing that could cause that light to turn on & silly enough to say so....but try turning your gas cap a few more times (3x's at least)
By doing so, it seals the ????? better & it won't trigger the CEL to pop up on you. Hopefully, that's all it is.....check it out & see

already tried the gas cap and I dont have onstar enabled.
I'm surprised there's not a way to display trouble codes by turning the key on and off 3 or 4 times or something like that ???

Re: How to get the CEL code?

If you have an Autozone parts store in your town you can go there and get the computer scanned for free. There is no way to read codes on ODBII cars without a scan tool.

I have had 3 chrysler ODBII cars and all three would give you the code if you turned the key on and off 3 times....it would display it where the digital readout is below the mileage.
I guess GM is not that sophisticated.

Re: How to get the CEL code?

onboard diagnostics the way chrysler does it is not sophisticated, it just leads to replacement of good parts by people that read the code and guess at the repair.

you're right about that....chrysler techs wont even look at your car unless there is a code to tell them what to look for.

My problem is all the service people in my area are on strike so I cant take it to a dealer....it would be nice to just know if it is something serious or not. I guess I'll have to take it to autozone or activate onstar.
