I have a 1998 Contour SVT. After a very short time in the car there is a smoking problem that seems to come from the glovebox and out of the vents. The temperature gauge is fine. The oil is fine. I think something electrical may be burning. I have opened the hood and couldn't determine the problem. What can this be? The smoking doesn't effect the driving of the car. What should i do?

It is most likely your factory amp for premium sound. Ford puts the amp right behind the glove box. There are 2 screws under the glove box to remove it, take them out and lower the glove box, then just check it out. See what's smoking.

Re: 1998 Contour smoking from glovebox
Just wanted to let you know that I did attempt to remove the glove compartment and I've had no luck. I've re-read your post and I see what I was doing wrong. I'll try again and report back.
