328iS vs. GTP vs. Me

I was driving down the highway minding my own business in the middle lane when I saw 2 sets of headlights come up behind me, one on each side. First, an E36 BMW 328is passed me on the left and a second later an older model Pontiac Grand Prix passed me on he right going at least 90.

I sped up without downshifting and instantly caught up and they slowed down to about 70. I was behind the grand prix in the middle lane. The BMW was in the left lane and the right lane was totally open. Obviously they were lining up for a race so I just stayed behind the GP to watch this. By this time they were going about 60. They both went WOT and I waited a second before I put it in third. I waited til they were about 3 car lengths ahead of me, moved to the right and went WOT. I cought up in less than 2 seconds and by 110 I was at least 6 car lengths ahead of the BMW and the BMW was at least another 2 ahead of the Grand Prix.

I moved into the middle lane and slowed down when all of the sudden I witness a double ricer fly by! The BMW flies by me on the left and the GTP moved into the right lane to fly by me! This was a one of a kind, never seen before fly by! These idiots kept on weaving through traffic swerving in front of cars without signals and what not, so I just slowed back down going the same speed I was going before. Both drivers were either late teens or early 20s. I wanted to line up with to see how far ahead I'd be if we started off at the same time but they never slowed down.

I'm gonna call BS on you pulling six car lengths on a 328iS like that.

Not an RSX, CL Type S which is a V6 and about 60 more horses than the RSX type S.

I have headers, Icebox, UR Pulleys and suspension work (H&R springs - Tokico Shocks)

People with the same setup have dynoed about 240-250 at the wheels, give or take a few hp.

They were probably pissed off at you. I know that I and my buddies, if racing on the highway, hate it when people jump in on us. Personally, if you dont get challenged, then stay back. But thats just me.

Naw, Bimmers arent good midspeed roll races. If they were starting from 60, the 328is was probably in low third, which I know with my car, is a weak zone. If you get one in mid second or mid third, then its another story. I'll go from 45 at 2500rpm in second, and thats head snapping right there. Also, the 328is only puts down high 190, low 200 hp wise. Now, if it was a 330ic, I'd call BS, but not on a 328 with his mods.

Re: 328iS vs. GTP vs. Me

If someone on the highway slowed down to 10 under the posted speed limit taking up two lanes, you'd probably do the same thing.

No, they didn't start making the 6 speeds til '03, those bastards. I have triptonic and I can gate shift too, which means I can be in any gear at any time(if I wanna f up the engine), but it's still nothing like a 6 speed.

If it was a 6 speed, the car would be a lot quicker. Because of this little automatic slushbox, the car loses about 50hp from crank to the wheels. Stock 6 speeds dyno at 225-230 at the wheels, and automatics at 210-215. With the same mods, 6 speeds make about 20-30 more whp than automatics.

i know how the auto tranny is on the CL type S. my mom owns a TL type S. and you can't stay in first gear. it always shifts for you. however if you romp on it, it will shift at redline. my only gripe is that it doesnt' shift fast enough but it does have some balls, and it has some engine braking. overall better then in full automatic mode but no where near as good as a true manuel.

Re: Re: Re: Re: 328iS vs. GTP vs. Me

When you say, "an older model GP", do you mean the 96 or previous?

If it was a 97-03, was it a GTP?

I am curious because we all know it is impossible to beat a GTP.

It looked like an older one, but not really old. It had a double exhaust. I'm not really too familiar with them, but it wasn't the new one. It wasn't a really old one for sure.

It looked just like this one, only in a goldish/yellow/ugly color. Maybe it wasn't a GTP maybe it was just a GT, but I speculated GTP because it had a double exhaust.

BTW, are those numbers on edmunds right? 240 hp and 280 lb ft of tq, and 0-60 is only 8.8, or is it just a typo? It doesn't say how much they weigh. My 0-60 is 5.2 but the car is at its best in 3rd before it hits a wall in 4th.
