1st gen u-joint replacement

I'm beginning to think the ujoints in my '89 beater r getting loose - what mileage have others found they got b4 needing replacement, and what was symptoms?

Re: 1st gen u-joint replacement

Around 170K miles. Get all tension off the drive train and crawl under the truck and try to turn/wiggle the shaft. Any looseness and they are ready. Or if you hear a squeeking noise at low speeds that could be a sign.

If you get a rather loud CLUNK when going from drive to reverse is one symptom.
