Engine Upgrades for '84 Civic

Hey

I just brought an '84 25R civic for $500nzd and its in bloody good nic. The only problem that there is is the leaking ,well pissing, water pump which i am currently replacing. But i was wondering what upgrades i could do to the engine to speeze some more grunt outta it? I have no real exparence with cars but i can figure things out and learn pretty fast. So what do rekon i could do? I was thing twin carbs, but what type of car could i get them off? And also a triple overhead vtec cam but that might require a new gearbox right? Anyway any suggestions would be great!
