engine building...

Hi everyone, I am starting to think about building some engines. I love working on things but have never messed with engines. I work at a large shop with 25+ other techs so I have people to ask. But my big problem is what to start on. I am thinking of a Type R with spoon internals and a few other goodies. If I get this one dune with no problems I will ask if someone wouldn’t mind me installing it in there car for 2,000 miles for some testing. And then have the option of buying or I would sell to someone. When that’s good I will move on to a turbo’ed engine and then my dream of a spoon S2000 turbo’ed Engine. To be put in an S2000 for testing and then moved to its home in a project car. Anyway I am looking for a list of things I would need. Thank you for any help…

Re: engine building...

don't waste your money on spoon shit if you're going to turbo it, spoon motors are intended for naturally aspirated road-racing.

Re: engine building...

i agree and the spoon parts really all that, there are many other products on the market that perform just as good or better, for a fraction of the price.

Well depending on your knowledge of engines I might recommend pickin up a used lawnmower engine and tearing it apart and then putting it back together. Start small. If you can't get a lawnmower right you should not try a bigger more complicated engine. I think you will do just fine though and wish you good luck and much fun. I love rebuilding engines and am always actively searching for engines to rebuild.

Re: engine building...

I don't think its going to really be practical to try and put your engines in somebody elses car aas a test bed unless you got a friend that realy needs an engine. What i would do is go find an old civic/ crx (if your into that sorta thing) gut it and build the engine. take said project car to your choice of racing venue (hopefully road racing, 1/4 mile is so over, get some real skills kids) and test it out. beat the hell out of it. find out what you did right/ wrong.

Yes, because we all know track racing is a better place than the strip to figure out engine things.

No Phoenix, what I'm saying is that theres all these kids out there with these riced up cars that think there drag racers when they really don't have any skills at all. Why not really learn how to drive. Get some shoes on your feet and go do some track days, get involved with something like solo or scca. And you're probley some renowned engine builder right phoenix, yea you know what you're talking about.

Re: engine building...

No, but at least I can form sentences and spell.

And at least I know that you don't go to an autocross or some bs like that to test an engine. You could, but you won't come out of it with any real data on what you built.
Now, I'm not saying tracks are bad. Its in fact quite the opposite, but its stupid to completely leave the strip out of testing. What else would you go by to know times for the car?

damn autocrossers, you want to take your engine and test it, take it to a 1/4 mile.

what your saying is that a kid that goes out and races his car at teh track every month or weekend, isnt called a drag racer ? even though his car maybe riced up, he not a drag racer ?

well then i hope you dont consider yourself a drag racer because i wouldnt want assholes like you to be put in the same catagory (drag racer) as me.

Why does it matter where you test your engine? Both spawn cars of different likes. Unless you can definatively say that one is better than the other...... In other words, quit being ignorant. Bring your car (with the engine in it of coarse) to a dyno.

Re: engine building...

I only go to the track to see how fast i'm goin. Not to test my engine. To test my engine...i go to the dyno and tune. Correct me if i'm wrong

Re: engine building...

what autocross track are you going to to max your car out? every one i have been do is too winedy and straights too short to get near even bone stock cars to top speeds...fastest ive ever gone is 126...in a car that we have taken to 145 on open road...but you can get an idea about how your engine is doing at autocross...how well it pulls out of corners and pushes you through the straights...and you actually have to know how to drive ... not go straight and upshift...

Re: engine building...

Well, nobody said anything about knowing how to drive. You don't have to know how to drive to build an engine. The main point is autocross is only a means of testing the engine if you want to check endurance. That's about it.

And yeah, dyno's are good. Forgot about those.
That still doesn't make the 1/4 a waste of time though.

Re: engine building...

I was starting to think about going on a long trip for endurance, most likely from Dallas to Chicago and back without stopping but for gas. That should work for most everything.
