Engine Swap 2.8 to 3.1

I know the 3.1 is just a bored out 3.1, and they have the same dimentions as for fitting into the place of a 2.8. What I need to know is if I can throw a 3.1 Multi-Port into my 88 Z24 and use the Tranny from the 2.8. I am all ready to buy the 3.1, but I don't want to buy it until I can find out if it will work.

Re: Engine Swap 2.8 to 3.1

Someone told me you can put a 2.8 bottom end on a 3.1 head (vice versa?) and get more power, maybe easier just to use the whole 3.1 though...

i think the heads are the same i think the only difference is the crank and the pistons that would make it a 3.1

Thanks for the input. I figured it would be able to work with the 2.8 tranny, but I know the Grand Am's from 95-96 with the same engine couldn't swap trannys. So I thought I'd make sure before I bought the new engine.

Thanks

Re: Engine Swap 2.8 to 3.1

My friend did that sort of thing with his z and it worked just fine. I'm not sure how much extra work he needed to do, but it should work

Fit perfectly

The 3.1 fit perfectly in place of the 2.8, and it runs amazingly well! Smartest decision I've made in a while! (after buying my iPod) Thanks for the help.
