auto hubs
2000 xterra SE 4x4, standard tranny:
i just did my brakes & repacked bearings. everything went apparently smoothly. after putting it all back together, the right hub was acting up, in 2wd: loud clicking/grinding noise above say 10 mph, clunking in reverse, went away in 4wd, would stay gone until reversing to unlock the hubs. took off the hub several times, convinced myself every thing was correctly installed... same problem. I swapped the left & right hubs & the problem seems to have gone away??? are the left & right hubs different?? i swear i kept them on the smae side for reaasembly, but anything is possible. thnx jz |

Re: auto hubs
Hubs are the same, but by swapping, you finally addressed the problem, which was the LEFT hub. A problem with one hub causes the noise on the opposite side. It's counter-intuitive.

ahhhhh, now i get it! left hub was locked/stuck! my friend helped with the reassembly, & i can distinctly remember the left hub NOT being flush to the rotor before tightening the hex bolts, hence the lock-up.
thanks for the reply! jz |
