Question 3 Inch Downpipe for eclipse

I own a 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse 1.8L fwd. I found a 3 inch downpipe for this car and I'm not sure if I should get it. Isn't a 3" downpipe a little too much for a 1.8L non turbo? I've heard that not enough backpressure can do serious harm to an engine, especially a small engine like a 1.8L. Should I get the downpipe or is it not worth it?

There is no downpipe for a non turbo car, and odds are the listing you found is a typo. You definitely dont want or need a 3" exhaust on a regular 1.8

Re: 3 Inch Downpipe for eclipse

It doesnt use the same name. Downpipe is for a turbo. Some poeple call its NT equivalent the front pipe. If "downpipe" and "3 inch" were used in the same line, that part is intended for a turbo car.

Re: 3 Inch Downpipe for eclipse

hmm there seems to be a trend.. downpipe verses frontpipe... header vs manifold (what ones the turbo again?).. i mean whats next tell me its still called a air filter on both.. i just dont see the point.. the downpipe on a turbo takes the exhaust down under the engine into the exhaust right?... the downpipe (or frontpipe) on a non turbo takes the exhaust down under the engine and into the exhaust right?.. im just not seeing a overwhelming diference that would need seperate names...

Re: 3 Inch Downpipe for eclipse

Because when talking about this stuff on something as informal as a message forum, the only thing that differentiates between different ideas/thoughts/etc is often the terminolgy used. Its not to be nit picky, but there has to be some order to this madness I'm not out to prove someone wrong, theres just nothing in it for me.

My point is, the way the original post was worded tells me there was a typo in the ad. Example: ARP doesnt even know that the 11 to 12mm head stud siwtchover was after 92 when they went to 7 bolts, not 95 when they changed body style for chrisakes. Never mind something as trivial as a "frownpipe," the new internet term for the first part of the exhaust piping. He is more than welcome to take the risk and buy the wrong part, it defintely wont affect me or my car
