catalyic converter heat shield

My catalyic converters heat sheild has been loose for awhile and it makes a horrible rattling noise so i just ripped off today. some people say the heat shields are usless. But i should replace it right? I mean they have to serve some sort of purpose.

Re: catalyic converter heat shield

From what I know the shield is to reduce the risk of fire. Not sure how well it works, but if it's cheap to fix, why not fix it.

Re: catalyic converter heat shield

I think I have a similar problem. My '95 Prizm has a buzzing sound sometimes while driving. It's annoying, like a bumble bee. I need to get it fixed!

I would make sure all the hanger/bolts are tite and nothing is hanging. Should be a easy fix.

Re: Re: catalyic converter heat shield

Hey, don't make fun of Geo's...haha. The guys here at work are always pretending to think its a Metro. Big insult! Anyways, its been raining here in Southern California so the noise of the rain has been drowning out the sound...my boss is gone so he will probably check it out tomorrow. I am betting its the heat shield. The noise its making sounds like that may be it. I am hoping its easy to fix. I have already put too much $$$ into this thing...and its gotta a Toyota engine and trans....dammit! Why did the GM have to shine through?

Putting down GM, Oh here we go!(JK)
Good luck I hope that well built Toyota motor doesn't accidently fall out they are known for that.(once again JK!)
Let us know what it turns out to be. By the way is Cali still as nice as I remember I use to live in Santa Monica.

Re: catalyic converter heat shield

Yeah, Cali is still nice, especially when its raining. It's just surrounded by a thick layer of smog, but of course, they are working on this problem by making people get $60 smog checks! I'm never gonna leave here though.
