Probably a valve out of adjustment

Depends on how out of adjustment it is. A little isn't going to damage anything. As far as the expense, I don't know how to adjust your valve clearances. Usually Toyotas are a pain, but I don't know your engine to be sure. Some engines are really easy.

Re: tick tick tick tick coming from engine some where.84 celica
It could possible be lifters ticking. Does the sound go away at all after you change the oil??
You could try adding a bit of ATF to your engine oil. It has lots of detergents in it and often cures lifter problems by giving the valvetrain a good cleaning. |

Re: tick tick tick tick coming from engine some where.84 celica
hello,
no i just changed my oil with a new oil filter and mobal 1 oil and it still does it. if u take a metal screw driver with a plastic hanlde and cuff your hand over the plastic to make a cuff for your ear and put thetip of the screw driver on your valve case and u can hear inside your engine and it dont sound like its comong from there but between the vavle case and the intake manafold. thanks |

just a side note if you do readjust your valve gappings, it's really easy on the 22RE, SOHC and all you need to do is take off some of the vaccum hoses above the cover, unscrew the bolts on the valvecover, take a puddy knive and slide it under the valve cover and above the seal and loosen it that way. Be careful not to scratch the smooth part under the valve cover. And readjusting my valves gave me about another 4 miles to the gallon. Really helps my mpg but nothing noticable on the performance end.

Re: tick tick et. al.
Is the sound intermitant? Does it have anything to do temperature?
Lastly, does it have anything to do with steering? The power steering pump should be near by I believe, and it won't be easy telling the pump clicking from engine block. Do you see any oil leeks around pump? If the sound goes away or changes when you rigorously move steering, it could be pwer steering pump. Hope this helps. |

Re: Re: tick tick tick tick coming from engine some where.84 celica
So if it has a power steering pump, then there should be a visible drive belt from engine to the rotate the pump... first and foremost. Besides, if you don't have power steering, you have to work bloody hard to turn steering when car is still.
I am sure someone here would know when power steering was introduced. |

Another thing outside but close to engine that can make that sound is the magnetic cluth of AC. Try switching AC on and off a few times and see if it affects the noise. Just a thought.
