Making a stronger rear bumper, need advice...

Ever since I got rear ended and almost had my car written off I've been wanting to build a strong steel tube bumper to protect the tin can unibody from crumpling... I'm thinking of replacing/beefing up the rear crossmember (where inner lower control arms bolt to) and mounting 2 brackets on the back of the rcm where steel tubes will mount to and support the bumper. Has anyone ever seen something like this before? Any ideas how it can be done without damaging the original parts but just welding or bolting on extra pieces and being able to remove most of it for a safety etc?

He is right. Cars are sopposed to cringe, it absorbs the hit rather than bouncing it. Basically if it was all solid then the car would stay put and your body would fly when being hit. I dont know, its up to you I guess. I just would not mess with things like that, because Honda would have improved it if they could have.... although back then they didnt expect to be a million SUV's on the road either :-p

coming from a person that does body work, if you get in a wreck again it will cause more harm than good on both your part and the cars.

is there any kind of extra shock absorber/crumpling piece that can be bolted to the back of the car to take the hit so I can just replace the part instead of the whole car? not that I plan to get hit again but there are so many stupid drivers here that I want to plan for the worst 'just in case'

Styrofoam pieces? Or go to home depot, and get some of that bubble stuff, that is in a spray paint type can, and fill it behind the bumper. They use this stuff for under bath tubs and stuff, underneath the bath tub itself, the part where ya dont see . Try that
