Question Better Braking

I was wondering if you guys could suggest a good set of pads for my 4.0L 4x4 1989 Cherokee.

When I have to slam on the brakes, the vehicle just does not want to stop. I have stcuk on new pads about 25k km ago and this is the same problem from the start.

Any ideas on makes etc and are they available in Toronto??

Talking

Check your rear brake adjustment. If rear brakes out of adjustment, you will have that condition.
Good luck!

Re: Better Braking

Did that, but no go.
Also, tyhe rar brakes keep seizing after driving in the rain. This is with new cylinders & hardware - inc. drums!!
Braking is not the jeeps strong point!!

Re: Better Braking

I have a simular problem in my 00' XJ. Replaced both calipers, running Carbon-metallic pads. Bled the hell out of the system, still lacking "good" stopping power. I was thinking of going with a set of Power slot rotors, and of course their recommended pads. Has anyone heard anything about these, or have a better suggestion.
Also replaced rear shoes, hardware. Wheel cylinders looked good (no seepage). As far as your lock-up problem, double check you E-brake cabe is fully disengaged. Also double check that the right shoe is in the right place. Short in the front, long in the back.(pad on shoe length)

Re: Better Braking

All older Chreokees have poor brakes. Late 90's cherokees had different master cylinders which helps the situation and can be retrofitred to theolder Jeeps.

can the late 90s brakes be retrofitted to a 91 abs setup to resolve all the recall issues with that year?

Re: Better Braking

will a new master cylinder be strong enough to stop it well with over sized tires (33in.) or would an aftermarket brake system be more advisable...Money is an issue

Re: Better Braking

i bought an 89 cherokee and avoided the whole piece of shit abs system by converting it to the 88 non abs, everything bolts up fine, the only thing you need is the booster and combination valve, everything else is the same.

Braking

There is a way to improve the braking on pre 90' XJs.Search for
http://www.madxj.com.
There is a detailed write up on the procedure. This involves a swap out from the single diaphgram booster to the dual diaphgram booster/Master cylinder combo.
The write up does mention that larger tires can reduce the braking capabilities of the vehicle, due to more weight etc.
Swap WILL improve the braking on stock vehicles.

Re: Better Braking

i but a bendix mastercylinder from an 03 cherokee on mine with a little adjustments to get it to fit. also you need to fine one without abs if you dont have it or with abs if you have abs i did that. bendix rotors and put performance friction pads on the from. worked 75% better but still not like my wifes bmw. The rears i did new drums and pads with new wheel seals while i was in there and like i said 75% better. i am a loyal performance friction pad user and they are great. if pagid made pads for a jeep i would use them but they don't.
