Is an auto prelude worth fixing up for racing?

I'm starting to really feel bad because I didn't get an SH type when I bought my 2001 lude during the summer. I moded it somewhat but i am thinking is there a point to even mod up my lude because even if i do mod it up it won't be as fast as an sh or other cars. Anyone have any input on this? It's the sportshift auto.

Well if you are planning on turbocharging it or something like that then I wouldn't really worry about the AT too much. If you're talking about fixing it up for drag racing then you may notice that some guys that drag race professionally use auto trannies because they are easier to launch, but of course most if not all of them are running crazy amounts of boost too.

well i'm sure there are members who'll disagree on your reasoning that the sh is much faster than the base. the 5 speed is faster than the auto if that's what you mean. here's my take on it, i dont' mod my car to make it faster than other cars on the road, i mod it to make it faster than it was before i added mods. and if during that whole process it becomes faster than other cars, then great. if not then i don't care. if that makes any sense to you, kudos coz i dont' think i know what i just said.

Your best bet is to drop an SH engine in there, don't try converting an auto....If you dog your tranny and plan on keeping it make sure to get proper maintenance and flush it often, or say goodbye to it.....I've seen many trannies go....Maybe you should just get a new car....If you mod out your Prelude and try to sell it, it will become very invaluable.
Sell Your Car (Make it as stock as possible)
---or---
Get a new engine (BEST BET)
---or---

The SH motor and the motor in a base Prelude is the exact same motor.

WTF are you on man?

Too bad he totalled his ride.
I agree with you about the mod thing. Mine is a 99SS and runs just fine thank you on the track. I cannot do what the Vipers and Vettes do-not enough horsepower, but I am more than respectable cornering while they have the straightaway speed. My mods are quite visible for what they are-suspension and wheels only along with the Thermal exhaust. Simple mods that produce real results for my needs.
It is fun to work on a car and try to improve something specific-my focus has and will be handling. (to each his own)
Peace and Happy Luding

i don't think any honda, besides the nsx, is meant to hang with the vette and vipers. way too much torque and power, not to mention RWD. don't mod your car relative to what others are doing. be an individual and create your own piece of machinery. then you can say, look what i did, not look what i copied. some mods of mine such as the supercharger, intake, header, vtec-afc controller and others are hidden. you can't tell i have them (unless of course you race me and lose or open the hood) i was gonna do the all sleeper look, maybe aftermarket wheels, but no body kit or decals or anything to give something away. but i do have a body kit on it so there goes that. at least i don't have any decals or stickers on it. am i rambling now?? ok, i'll shut up.:bandit:

yeh, this is a fun car, not a sportscar, so if you need to go really fast off the line, you should get a different car. i run a ss and it's great fun for me. won't trade it for a SH.

realistically, dont expect to get in the 15's with the SS model normally aspirated.... Best I got was a 16.1... The 60 ft times on the SS model is what kills you. Normally youd want to be at 2.2-2.3 on the 60ft...Auto ludes run 2.6-2.7. This does you in for the 1/4 mile, even if youre reaction time is .500-.600.....

The 5spd sh models can run 15's day in and out..Maybe with heavy mods, can go 14's too...

Teh lud eisnt a race car, but you might want to try the autocross..with the SS mode on, you should be able to dominate a short track with the flawless shifting of the SS...

If youre going to 1/4 mile it... at the line...
hold the brake pedal and hold rpms' to 3000 rpm. let go the brake/punch gas on the third yellow...youwill not redlight....
shift at 7500 on your tach. 8k will hit rev limiter...

maybe with a set of lightweight racing wheels and slicks, you can get your 60ft time down to 2.4 or lower....possible but not real sure...

errr... corvettes have always been known for being a handling car. not only will it smoke you in a straight, but it will also smoke you through a corner.

Ok I have a 93 SI with intake and exhaust and A/T and the best 60' I pulled was a 2.435 on 17" Tantrums. I like my car and the way it looks: almost stock. I just hate (with a firey passion from hell) my A/T. That is why I am about to sell it and get a 5-speed. There is a H22A Type-S motor waiting for me.

Anyway. I say go ahead and keep the car. Just don't run high boost on that tranny. Like someone said: "flush it often" Those trannies are very sensitive to boost and Honda makes the the shittiest A/T ever. They last as long as you take care of them but any abuse will not be tollerated.
