spark but no fuel, tried everything
I have a 93 cavalier that won't start. It has spark but nofuel, and will run if primed with fuel. I have tried everything: fuel regulator, oil pressure switch, fuel pump, crankshaft sensor, and even swapping out the computer. The check engine signal does not go on and it would seem that the terminals for testing for codes does not respond. I have exhausted all conventional methods I can think of. Anyone got an idea?

Re: spark but no fuel, tried everything
I am having the same problem right now. I've replaced the fuel pump, computer and crankshaft sensor. If you figure this out please e-mail me at [email protected] (as well as post here). I will do the same.

Have you changed the fuel filter?

what I've done
I've replaced the fuel pump, relay, the crank sensor, and the computer. I have not replaced the fuel filter. When it won't start normally, it will start by jumpering the prime? wire.

Re: spark but no fuel, tried everything
I'd check the fuses first. I'd also short the two pins on the computer connector under the dash and turn the key on. Your check engine should flash a code 12 which means that your computer is working. If you're unfamiliar with this, it will flash each code 3 times for code 12, it will flash once and then twice, pause and then repeat.
What motor do you have, the 2.2 with TBI? |

Re: spark but no fuel, tried everything
consult a wiring diagram and see if you are getting power to the relay from the ignition. You may have a broken power wire to the relay.

Ignition related?
I hope Old School is having some luck because I sort of took over his post. Sorry. I notice that after the computer replacement that when i turn the ignition to the on position and wait to hear the fuel pump, it seems to start. When I just turn the key quickly and immediately engage the starter is when I seem to have the problem. I am going to start driving the car tomorrow again so I might have more information. This is just a work beater (1994)so I'm not too concerned but it's a lot easier on gas than the full size K1500.

Re: spark but no fuel, tried everything
He didn't try everything.
How can you miss checking the fuel filter and fuel pump with a problem related to fuel. It is the first thing you check. Replaces the computer but doesn't check the fuel filter? W...T...F.... |

Re: spark but no fuel, tried everything
if it delays starting, you may have a fuel regulator bleeding off pressure. Check fuel pressure at the rail, and leave the guage attached and see if the reading starts to drop after sitting a while. IF it does drop, I'd suspect the regulator or the vacuum supply to it. If it doesn't drop, I'd suspect the fuel pump.

Re: spark but no fuel, tried everything
For those of you trying to adress this problem, I still have had no luck. I have determined that my check engine light is not working, and the injectors are not getting enough voltage to tur on. It is a mystery....

fuel filter
I am getting mine changed right now. I'll let you know how it went. I'm also getting a code for the EGR valve. I'll get that done this weekend but believe that's unrelated to the problem at hand.

Re: spark but no fuel, tried everything
ok, get a new EGR vlave gasket and remove the EGR yourself and spary it down with throttle boady cleaner and make sure the pintle moves freely and reinstall.
Should take about 10 minutes and will cost you $3 to repair. |
