1995 century 3.1, runs when it wants to

i have a 1995 century limited with a 3.1 v6. when you turn the ignition on a relay under the hood will will make all kinds of noise and the car won't start. sometime wihen you turn the key on the relay wont make any noise and the car will start. one time i got the car to start and started driving it, when i got to about 55 mph the speedometer needle jumped up then went all the way down to zero then the engine died. i cant figure out what the realy is for i went to the parts store and they said that the relay was for the a/c and i dont see what that would have to do with the car running. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Is the check engine light coming on at all?
If you aren't getting any codes, possibly have someone crank it while you listen to which relay is making the noise. You can usually put your finger on the one that's doing it and feel it clicking.
