Brake pedal switch

I noticed that the brake lights on my '96 Tahoe were intermittent. Upon checking the brake pedal, I reached underneath and found that what I assume to be the switch was loose. It popped back in place relatively easy, and the lights worked fine. However, it had come off again by the time I checked a short while later. Has anyone had a similiar problem? Is this a fixable problem or should I get a whole new part? Either way, is it something a mechanically inclined guy - I've changed brake rotors and pads, as well as the power steering high pressure hose, and always do my own oil/filter changes - can do himself? Or am I gonna have to take it to a dealership?

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Unless you can fit into a trashcan don't

I had a similar problem with the break pedal switch on my '95 Tahoe that was even more bizarre than you could imagine. The car wouldn't turn off unless you pressed the brake pedal. Yep the key would be off and completely out of the ignition switch but the beast was still running! I spent several days ripping out the ignition switch, column wiring, etc. to no avail. I finally got to the brake switch and found that one of the inside contacts had broken off and was shorting the inside of the switch causing power to remain to the engine. The problem is that to get to the switch you have to be 1. VERY small, 2. Like cramped spaces, 3. like getting scratched and cut all to hell getting your hand into the space to replace the switch. Other than that go for it!
