oil pressure gauge question

Hey there, I own a 98 cherokee sport 4litre, sometimes when I start the engine, the oil pressure gauge stays at 0 pressure and warning light comes on. What I do then is turn engine off, then on again and then the oil gauge shows pressure and all is well. I'm wondering what could this be because I'm afraid of it happening to me while driving, so far it only happens on startup and only once in awhile, thanxs.

Re: oil pressure gauge question

When you start the engine and it shows no pressure, how long do you let it idle before shutting it off? At least 10 seconds?

Check the wire connection at the oil pressure sending unit on the engine, it could be loose, or the unit itself could be going bad.

Hey

My 98 had great pressure when I bought it about a month or so ago. Then I was driving and I noticed low pressure and wouldnt raise much while driving. After cooling down and starting again it would take a few seconds to move.
I fixed this problem on the first guess. It was the oil sending unit located near the filter. I got mine on ebay but Autozone has them for about $25-30. Its a good bet yours is bad.

The only way I know to make sure if you have oil pressure is to hook up a mechical guage to see if you have oil pressure or a bad sending unit.
