Hot!

i always hear about people overheating, and avoiding overheating but never knew what the ill effects of this are. Anyway, the 240sx with the sr20det overheated, and i was wondering what the ill effects of an overheated car are. The car got really hot real fast, the water boiled, and i turned it off pretty much as this was happening. The water in the over flow resovoir was boiling. Hopefully overheating like this doesnt kill anything??? Ok well i'm a complete noob thanks for dealin with me.
Thanks
mark

blown headgasket and eventually a warped head, sometimes block damage as well....

this is the exact reason why I think the SR20 is not that great of a motor nowadays.....

cause if it got overheated bad, with it being all aluminum.. all it takes is one time and the entire motor can be ruined, forcing you to buy another 2 grand motorset or an even higher monetary value front clip..

chances are you blew the headgasket, there is a good possibility the head is no longer useable, and also a slight chance the entire block is fucked up.....

aluminum doesn't take heat very well.

good luck

KA power

A kid at my school just warped his LS1 Block / Heads

someone needs to invent a device that you attach to your nipples and it shocks the shit out of you when something goes wrong... like a warning light except it makes you pay attention

Ok sorry, Like i said i am new to all of this and have never had a car overheat on me before. The Temp needle in the car did not go over the the final line before "H", but it was about right on the line. I guess i dont know the definition of overheating??? all i know is it got hot. too hot...lemme know what you guys think. also, The car starts up fine, i just drove it and it drove fine. It doesnt seem like there is anything different, that i notice at least. No white smoke coming out of exhaust either. sorry for all the questions, i am really worked up about this and nervous/scared. Thanks.

take it to a mechanic, another downside of the Sr20det... cause none of them will know what it is, be able to get parts for it, and to end it all they will probably send you right out the front door.... most places don't work on modified cars, cause its a pain in the ass and a lot of things like to disagree... usually when they see you swapped an engine into a car they will give you a wierd look and say sorry

Re: Hot!

well if that was tha first time it overheated on you and you said it runs same as before then chances are that nuthin went wrong this time.. unless it smokes alot then you needa replace your head gasket.

turbocharged, small ass radiator, all aluminum makes it succeptable to heat.... the turbocharger makes a SHIT LOAD of heat, from the air going into the head to the heat dissapating off the turbo itself, top that off with a shitty ass radiator in a hot climate and u got a recipe for disaster.

to counter

get a KOYO radiator
new thermostat, maybe even lower temp
new hoses
new water pump
new coolant

Electric fans can cool good but if u get em make sure you have them set so they turn on and off by themselves. If you run them to a switch you might forget to turn the fan on 1 times out of a thousand and that would be all it takes. The Engine driven clutch fan will work good, even when they mess up MOST time the clutch locks up and they are 1:1 with the engine RPM's...... makes it sound shitty and loud but that fan is pumping air like a champ
