Cool Interference engine

Hi

I have a 1996 MK3 Golf diesel ('p') with a 64 BHP, non turbo, 1Y type engine.

Can anyone tell me if the engine is an interference type or not ?

I think the cambelt change interval is 60K miles - is that correct ?

All the diesels are interference. 60K miles is the preferred interval, it requires several special tools, so find someone familiar with the diesels.

Thanks Boschmann, I was afraid that was indeed the case.

I have been looking through the Haynes manual and because this belt has a semi automatic tensioner, I may be able to get away with using circlip pliers rather than the special tool normally required to adjust the tensioner.

The current belt, which has been on the car for over 40K miles is very tight. Haynes mention being able to twist the belt through 90 degrees between the 2 pulleys - I would say that is barely possible - 45 degrees would be nearer. Do you think I need to back the tensioner off a bit ?

Is it important to fit a VW/Audi cambelt or would one from Motaquip be acceptable ?

A pair of snap-ring pliers will do the job on the tensioner if needed, you probably won't even need it as if you just barely losen the tensioner nut it will slowly let the pulley rotate. Just lock it back before it gets too loose. The special tools for replacing the belt are for locking the cam & injection pump and for checking the pump timing. That year belt is set comparatively loose versus a gas version. Does the belt whine when revved? Thats the normal sign it's too tight.

No whining when running so it would seem the belt is not displaying symptoms of being overtight.

Haynes don't seem to make any fuss about locking the cam + injector pump and I don't think they even mention the pump timing check. Do you think they are oversimplifying the job ?

Would you always fit a VW/Audi belt or are aftermarket OK ?

Make sure you're looking in the diesel section. Timing belt on a gas engine is a very different job. As long as you don't take the belt off you don't need to worry & can loosen the tensioner to give the belt enough slack to get that 90 degree twist. If your'e thinking of taking the belt off you'll need several special tools; camshaft lock plate, injection pump lock pin & injection pump timing gauge.
