Hello,
I have a 1996 Cavalier sedan, 2.2L, Manual, VIN4. The ECU serial number on my car is 16215830. This ECU has given me intermitent problems, serious, believe me, troubleshooting has convinced me of a faulty ECU. I have bought (e-bay...) an used ECU with serial number 16231851. Does anybody knows if I can use this ECU on my car? Would it be enough if I just swap my original EPROM (MEM-CAL) module? I would appreciate any information on this. Many thanks and best regards. Re: Cavalier 1996 ECU model number?
gm# 16215830 supercedes 16231851, so they should be interchangeable. you will have to have it flashed to your vehicle for it to work, because these units are a PCM, not an ECM, and have no interchangeable prom.

Re: Re: Cavalier 1996 ECU model number?
Thank you very much for your reply to my post.
I have a question. Both this computers have a small plug-in module under a small aluminun lid. I assumed this is the EPROM or MEM-CAL module. If I just put the original plug-in module on the new computer, would it be enough? Or should I have to do an additional flash operation? This flashing, could be done with a scan-tool? Many thanks again for sharing your expertise. Diego Quote:

Re: Cavalier 1996 ECU model number?
I'm not sure if a flashable Prom can be removed from one PCM to another without being reprogrammed. I say give it a try, and see what happens.

Re: Cavalier 1996 ECU model number?
To all who read this thread:
I have tried replacing the plug-in MEM-CAL or EPROM module on the new computer and it did not work. Fortunately I did not ruin anything. Regards. Diego |
