Tranny Gone

Something i've never seen in my 2 years of driving.. haha, hey new to the VW forum im a regular with the T-birds, 2 days ago my 1997 Jetta 2.0 GLs, well what happend was my mom was driving it and the clutch seemed to disengage itself and all the sudden there were no gears. you could still drive the car but it was all like 1 long gear, you could put it in 1st 2nd 3rd 4th or 5th and drive right from start-up. we're taking it to a shop cause i can't even fix this, i've never seen anything like it, its almost like the linkage isnt connected to the tranny anymore. Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks
