help with tire selection

Im bout to put new rubber on my 79. It has stock 14x7 rims on there I would like to upgrade those but don't have the cash at the time. So I want to know what would be a good tire for performance(handling, traction...) that I can use in the mean time. thanks for any help.

Eric
