roller rockers....

today i was working on my 90 TSi and i was checking the timing cause i just bought the car and my suspicion was that it was out of time...well i get the timing belt cover off and i hand turn the engine. whent he crank is at the mark, the oil pump is off just a little. its as close as i can get it despite rotating it many times. but when the CAM gears are lined up, the crank is . its off about 40 degrees before the mark. so im now thouroughly disappointed by now thinking that my valves ARE bent.

then for some reason, i cant remember why, but i took the valve cover off. this is what i found: all the intake cam roller rockers fell off. thats right. they were sitting right next to the springs, not on them. there was 1 or 2 that WERE on but when i touched them they were loose and fell right off. the person i bought it from said that she was backing down her driveway in neutral and the car just quit. SUPPOSEDLY a friend rebuilt the head for her and this one has 300 miles on it. im no mechanic, what made the rockers fall off like that? pistons hitting valves? what is it that holds the rockers down? the EXHAUST side is completely fine... she drove it around a little bit before it did that. the timing belt looks brand new, i can still read all the lettering on it. but then again the timing marks say it is off...
any comments, questions???
this is my first DSM, just got it saturday. i did know it was going to be a little work, but is it already time for head job? sounds like it to me

Re: roller rockers....

When the valves bend, they dont close all the way. So when the cams come back to the base circle, there is no longer spring tension holding the rockers on. Valves are bent. Make sure it gets done properly this time

Re: roller rockers....

no... smaller ports and i wouldnt mess with putting a 2g head on a 1g block! look for a 1g head. if you have a 5spd then make sure you get a head that has 5spd cams, if you have an auto, either cams will work. its just that autos have different cams.

Re: roller rockers....

yep not a problem... this is what we are here for! you are goin to need new gaskets also so remember that. i would buy a head gasket set from the Parts Dinosoar on ebay, very nice guy, cheap prices too if you are on a budget, can get you a complete head set for less than $100 which is cheap. anyways be carefull doin the swap, timing is not the easiest thing to get right either so be very aware of what you are doing! get a chiltons or haynes manual and make that your bible. good luck, and if you have any questions dont be afraid to ask

MSN is fine... i added you.
