93 dakota fan fell off!

My 93 dakota (3.9, A/C, Auto) fan fell off! Luckily I was in the driveway, getting ready to leave when this happened. The fan did slice a hole in my radiator. So I have bought another, but before I put the new radiator in, I need to know if the fan is not going to come off again.

When I say the fan, I mean the Thermal Control Fan Drive (fan clutch assmbly?), the Fan Blade assembly, and the water pump pulley all came off in one piece. All I see on the engine is a shaft sticking out of the water pump.

In the Haynes manual, the water pump pulley is bolted on to a symetrical cross shaped piece on the shaft sticking out of the water pump. I don't seem to have one of those. There were not any bolts on the water pump pulley. Judging by the grime in the bolt holes, I'd say there haven't been any bolts for quite some time.

So am I missing some parts, or does that large hex bolt hold everyting on to the shaft?

The new radiator cost $200+ so I want to make sure the fan's not going to fly off again. Also I'm wondering if the fan clutch went out... the Haynes manual says something about silicone lubricant woud be evident if that happened. There is some rust-colored stuff on the shaft, but not lots.

I've posted some pictures to help: http://www.concatmedia.com/chris/dakota/fan.htm

Thanks!

Hmmm... I just read this elsewhere (http://www.sporttruck.com/techarticles/1411/index6.html):

Excessive fan noise: Fans that make too much noise, especially a roaring sound in warm weather, may need a new fan and fan clutch.

I have noticed this roaring sound for a few weeks, I thought it was an idle or A/C thing...

fan clutch

I had a vibration that i thought was suspension related but turned out to be fan clutch and tensioner....had both replaced and vibration left but now there seems to be excessive fan roaring noise that my mechanic said is normal because fan is now working correctly...

Re: 93 dakota fan fell off!

you need a water pump, unbolt the fan clutch, fan and pully from the part that broke off yours, the roaring noise you hear is when the clutch is hot enough to be engaged and the fan is pulling air, as the air cools, or speed of the engine climbs, the clutch will disengage and the fan will cost
