Unhappy engine surging

Hi, the engine on my 2002 Accent has started "surging" when driving on the freeway. It seems to happen after the engine is warm and when I release my foot off the gas. I also noticed that the rpms surge when I'm downshifting. What causes this and how can I fix it?

Re: engine surging

Hello there, I also have an '02 Accent and experienced very much the same problem.

I could be sitting at a light and all of a sudden the car would just want to go. Forcing me to hold the brake tight.

Also, when driving, it would clunk as it was still applying gas during shifts.

It was actually pretty scary.

Went in and had them take a look, it turned out to be some gas sensor, they had some stupid name for it. Anyhow, it was easy for them to find and they changed it under warrenty.

Took about an hour to fix.

Just take your car in and tell them the problem you're having, I'll bet it's quite commen.

The Accent is a good car, but it has it's quality quirks.

Good luck!
