Journalistic Metaphors

Okay, guys. I thought of something that worries me.

All the car mags have had their "first drive" articles about the RSX, and RSX Type-S. Most seem to be from a press event in Japan where Honda gave the test drivers an Integra GS-R and an RSX Type-S to compare side by side. All of them have said that the RSX is more refined, seems to have a better engine and is pretty much more fun to drive.

What worries me is that while they all seem to be impressed, none are singing it's praises with wonderfully colorful metaphors like they did with the Integra. I remember quotes like "a scalpel among steak knives," and something like "a combination of a slot car and a chain saw."

Why aren't they gushing over the RSX like that? Is it good, but not inspiring? Does it, as the press often accuses Japanese cars, lack a soul?

Or has anyone else found anything promising in this department?

I don't believe that no one around here reads car magazines.

I've read some of the reviews and it sounds to me like it will be all about the Type R. The Type S will be nice, but I think the soul of the integra will rest in the type R.

Not exactly sure what you are asking here. Are you saying RSX lost certain intangibles that make Integra so special?

I'm not saying anything. I'm asking why automotive reporters, who get to drive every car under the sun, aren't saying quite as much about the RSX as they did the Integra. Hell, I haven't even been near an RSX yet, save for at a car show.

Re-read the last two paragraphs to see what I mean.

Be glad that article didn't contain such lame metaphors. It seems to me that if they have to include weak sentences such as those, they have nothing better to write about the car. On the other hand I see your point as many people have compained about the RSX's unispired styling.

I'm not sure you guys are getting it at all. Magazine writers are writers. Their jobs is to describe to us, the readers, the nuances of the cars that can't be conveyed with statistics, performance numbers and pictures. They must employ language as descriptive and colorful as possible to convey the feeling of the car to the reader. If they don't won't you think the car is drab and lifeless?
