Angry leaking convertible top

I have a 96 spyder GS that started leaking water into the car recently. It's mainly in the rear passanger area and seems to pool up under the rear passenger floor mat. Ive done some research and this seems to be a fairly common problem with Spyders, so my question is does anyone have any ideas on how to stop the leaking without getting raped from a dealer whose probably not going to be able to fix it right anyway? I've heard about using silicone or scotchguard. Has anyone tried these and had success?

Re: leaking convertible top

the seals are out. Happened to my 98 spyder. IS happening to my 97 spyder. the seals right above the window collapsel try to manually pry them into shape... you just have to see where the seals bend in so that they let water thru, and then try to patch it up, or stuff that area with some other material...

Having the same problem with my 96 Spyder.. I heard on another topic here that It would cost somewhere around $1k to do a water seal.

Re: leaking convertible top

nope spray it on the ragtop/canvas... I just did the top but you can do the underside also..
This kept the water from getting through and collecting in the rails..

Re: leaking convertible top

Did you get any overspray on the car?? Or did you tape it off? Did it change the color of the top such as darken or lighten it? Thanks!

Re: leaking convertible top

I never bothered doing this, so I can't help you out. I just bought a beater car and don't drive her when it rains or over the winter.

Sorry!

Wink Re: leaking convertible top

i have a 97 spyder that is leaking. i had a new top put on july 2004 but the seals were not replaced. the auto top place says what's leaking is the seals and it is about $1100 to replace them.EEK!!

i think i know where the seals are. i am interested in the response about just looking to see where they are distorted and manually shaping them back to normal. could you please explain?

i dont know about scotchguard, does it damage the top? we have a LOT of rain here in Alabama and my spyder isnt garaged.
