New alternator but worse problem

1990 300zx 2+2 Z32

Ok I just replaced my alternator in my z it ran fine still on the jackstands but the belt was too lose so i went and bought a shorter belt works fine but once i installed the new belt and went to fire the engine (after i lowered the front off the jackstands) it wouldnt start. so i have gone through all the troubleshooting i know of and i know for a fact that its not getting spark i have checked all the relays and fuses and am completely out of ideas. All i have heard is that the computer might have been fried but it is getting fuel I have gone 5 days with no car because of this and any help is greatly appreciated. If you know a sensor that could cause this let me know and if possible a description of where that sensor might be.

is it cranking and just not starting. if it is not cranking and it just gives you a click. with the belt being too tight, it could have put the starter in a bind. get back under there and try tapping the starter.

Re: New alternator but worse problem

yeah, you might of put the belt too tight. you don't want belts too tight or too loose. a good rule of thumb is you should be able to turn the belt 90 degrees, no more and no less.

i dont know...go over everything and make sure the belt isnt on wrong or you didnt knock something loose. try goin back to the looser belt and see if it will turn over. then atleast you know if it is in the belt or not.

Re: New alternator but worse problem

exactly how loose was the first belt you used? i wouldn't recommend ever buying a smaller belt.

As far as the belt the recomended belt is a 405cm long belt which with the tensioner adjusted as far out as it would go was so loose that the belt could be pulled off the pulley. I only went down to a 400cm belt because i had to to get the alternator to be tight enough.

It could be your power transistor, however these are expensive and I'm not sure of any procedures you'd use to check it.

Is your ECU throwing any codes?

this is true...but i the 90's had a recall on it. it should ahve already been replaced by nissan back in 90-91. look under the hood for a little sticker that says power transistor replaced on a certain date or something like that. should be there.

Re: New alternator but worse problem

I had a very similar problem once before. It was just after i bought it.

Just got it home, parked it, turned it off and ran up inside to show my parents. We went over the whole car, playing with shit (like electric mirrors.. ooh fancy). Dad wanted to hear it run, so i cranked it over but it just wouldn't start.

We couldn't work it out at all. In the end i ended up burning out my starter motor, and had to get it replaced.. You know what it was? A little fuel-pump kill switch that was in the boot that I didn't realise existed. Turns out i must have flicked it a few times, and left it in the off position...

What year is your z that it has a fuel shut off switch and where would i be able to find this switch?? I don't think its the problem as i am not getting spark out of the coil's but that would still be a valueable thing to know thanks looks like i may break down and take the car to nissan as much as i don't want to do that they just charge to much but i dont trust any local shops to work on my baby lol

I just ordered a power transistor for it i hope thats the problem as i highly doubt all 6 coils would go bad simultaniously and i know the ecu is fine
