Red face HELP, please!!! Dad's 92 Mirage

My dad's 92 Mirage (automatic) won't down shift into first gear. So when u take off it is always in 2nd or overdrive. He pushed and pulled on the engine a bit one day and it started shifting, but it quit working after my mom used it. There is plenty of fluid, so that's not it. Does anyone know anything other then a new tranny that might work?

Yeah, if you read the owner's manual, it indicates that if the TCU dies, the trans will be in a "limp home" mode in which it will only work in 2nd gear. The overdrive may work because it is somewhat independent of the TCU. You need to take the car into a trans shop.
