How to change plugs on the back 4 cylinders?

I have some new plugs to put in my 95 Aurora, but need a little advise on the back 4 cylinders. Do you have to put them in from underneath the car and reach up to get them. Or do I just snake my socket and hand in there to get them.

Thanks,
Bob

you have to put them in from the top, you have to unbolt and unplug the coil pack and move it around to access the rear plugs, you will need a universal joint and a 3 inch extension with your plug wrench and ratchett for tools...save some grief replace only the 2 easiest bolts on the coil pack... news

i tried to do this task this past saturday but changed my mind because of access problems, now I know what 2 coil pack bolts you're talking about, are there more further back, and how many?

Seems like I removed a vacuum canister as well as the coil pack. I used a 3/8 drive ratchet with a 6" extension (don't hold me to that) and I was just able to get it all in to clear (no universal required). Mine were incredibly tight (seized) after 100K miles.

Total Job Time 1.75 hours:

Rear set: 1.5 hours

Front set: 0.25 hours

Re: How to change plugs on the back 4 cylinders?

There are four bolts holding the coil pack on and you do need to unplug the four little wire bundles. Some folks like to remove one of the coils to get to the hardest back bolt. Either the far right or one in from right will get you easier access to that bolt. There are two little bolts for each individual coil.

Which plugs did you get? Auroras are very fussy. I would also throw in a new set of wires. I like the Magnecors.

Re: How to change plugs on the back 4 cylinders?

This procedure is actually very easy...

Here it is...

1) First remove the wire harnesses that are on both sides of the coil packs and if I remember there is a grounding wire and also a sensor (don't know what it is) that is just to the left of the coil pack that is also easiy removed. Remove those items that way you can reach the back...

2) You will notice that there are two bolts in the front of the coil back. There are also to more that are directly on the other side to make a total of 4. Remove the first two on the front. Then remove the bolt on the left backside first. That will leave the bolt on the back right side/drivers side. You should be able to pivot the coil pack towards you opening up a little more room for you to reach behind and get that last bolt on the backside of the coil pack. Once you have done that, gently place the coil out of the way. What I do, is place the coil pack on a folded towel and place the coil pack on top of the fuel rail/intake maifold. Just becareful that you don't crack the fuel rail.

That then should open up the back side very nicely. You should be able to do this under an hour easily. Plugs and wires. If you have questions let me know...

The tools I use are basically a very small ratchet and socket to get to the bolts on the back side of the coil pack and then an extension to replace the plugs and of course the right size plug socket and ratchet...

Good luck

I would agree as well. The first time I did a tune up on my car I thought I would go the cheap route and not replace the wires. Then about six months later the problem came back and when I removed the plug wire on cylinder 5 is was cooked baby... And then when I pulled plug # 5, you could see where the plug wire arching really bad... I would do the wires as well...

Re: How to change plugs on the back 4 cylinders?

I got away with just removing the vac. can on mine, didn't even touch the coil pack. Maybe they set up a little different from year to year, or maybe it's tool availability that saved me. I couldn't see what I was doing, just felt my way around.

Re: Re: How to change plugs on the back 4 cylinders?

Yeah, the AC Delco OEM is the way to go. NKG's have been recommended as well, but you must be careful as they have about 4-5 different grades with only two of them platinum.

Kidd94, I tried to pivot the coil pack to get to the last bolt but was unsuccesful. Didn't want to act like a Chevy mechanic and wrench it around. Glad you found an easier way, even if it didn't work for me.
