"drift style" FD, suggestions - now posting standards

Split from thread "drift style" FD, suggestions. Doing so mucks up all the quotes and smilies.

Well lets begin with the bleeding obvious – lack of capitals and sentence structure. I'd heard that literacy was not a strong point with today’s youth, but this is getting ridiculous. Many of us (moderators that is) are appalled with the sudden downturn in writing standards by a large number of members. Disciplinary action is not far around the corner for some.

Please lets not let it get to the stage where we have to start wholesale post deletions and bannings.

I dont think many people really care. Where here to discuss car models not grammar, if I wanted that I would have taken English this semester.

I think you are wrong on that. Personally I don't bother to read posts which don't have any punctuation in them. It's just too hard. I do understand that the form of communication comes from using cell phones for instant messaging - where you want to minimize the number of keys you have to punch. But this is not a cell phone environment so I think different rules (of consideration and politeness) apply.

Also, I want to comment that posts from people for whom English is obviously a second language are usually much easier to read than some of the US/UK kiddy ghetto talk we see here.

Many people care, I’d go so far as to say most people care. If some individuals want to treat this forum as a chat room then there are other places to do that. If we want to include everybody, we have to write in a way that everybody can understand. The convention that has been chosen by Igor (and that you all agreed to when signing up) is English. Allowance is made for non-English speakers but frankly they are not the issue. Almost without exception they try their best and in many cases put the natural English speakers to shame.

It is all a question of education and respect for others. If people continue to post in kindergarten level grammar or ghetto talk then they are not complying with the AF User guidelines. They are effectively thumbing their noses at AF and all the members who make this a great community. Why should they feel they are above the majority of AF members? Why should they continue to enjoy the privileges of being members?

In short how can we discuss anything without a common language? That language is English, why is it so hard for some people to use it correctly?

Respect, fellows. Respect other posters here by giving us the credit of your full attention and interest. To half ass your posts is to show indication of half assed work, how do you think your models will go over here? How do you expect us to respect you or your opinions when you don't respect anyone else?

Ok, so if you're not going to do anything outside of your best interests, why not take advantage of this opportunity to practice using the language well, and concisely? You're going to have to be able to express yourself professionally, in English, in both written and spoken form whether you like it or not. I can't think of a better opportunity than this forum. You're already talking about what you like, take an extra moment and put in the extra effort to do it properly. You'll be amazed how much you can improve your articulation just by speaking. So, don't take english this semester, but that's no excuse to not use English properly. By not doing so you show how ignorant you really can be; would you show these posts to your professors? To your parents? To employers?

Re: "drift style" FD, suggestions - now posting standards

Has this turned into a flame session or something>? I am the first to admit my laziness has gotten the better of me, I tend to not use capitals at the start of a sentence anymore. So flame me if you want. i just dont think this should be an opportunity to flame someone for the lack of punctuation or grammar. This is just my . So ignore it if you wish.

Anyway, anymore Q's about the FD drifter dude.
Later, WIDE

Re: "drift style" FD, suggestions - now posting standards

Flame session? Why the need to reduce this discussion down to a cheap internet cliché? The standards required on AF are clear. Is it a case of we have to commence floggings until the standards are improved. Or are people adult enough to regulate themselves?

Willimo makes a very good point. Are the sort of people who put half an effort into something as simple as writing a post, the sort of people who are going to make half an effort building a model or anything in life? Is that how you want to be perceived, are those kind of people any use to AF? After all this modelling caper is not just a lark, it's deadly serious man!

Anyway, the rules are not negotiable, they are laid down by the Administrator. As a mod it’s my job to keep things running to the rules. Believe me I’m not enjoying this discussion or the dozen or so PMs I’ve sent in the last week about posting standards. I am very appreciative of those people who have responded positively, but also amazed at the ignorance of a few who refuse write legibly in their own native tongue. It is no surprise that there is a direct correlation between the standards of writing people are willing to adopt and the quality of their models. Seems to be the ones who can’t write are not contributing quality to this forum on many levels…

Re: Split: Posting Standards

Well put RallyRaider. I know that my posts have often lacked proper spelling, as I rely on my spell check too often. English is also not my first (or even third) language so I apologize for any grammatically or otherwise incoherent posts.

I will try to be more cognizant of this issue from here on.

Re: Split: Posting Standards

ywwong & slk320 Your use of the english language far exceeds most of the "English speaking " youth here. You are to be commended.
Rally Raider I am with you on this one.
If you can't communicate properly on an interent forum how do you expect to communicate in the real world? Believe it or not writing skills are still valued by employers.

Re: Split: Posting Standards

I understand what everybody is meaning right here. But I don't think you can blame people for grammatically wrong English. Lots of people have another native language. Don't get me wrong, I don't like chat talk here too, but don't be too hard on people who make grammatically wrong posts. I know I make a lot of grammatically foulds as well.

I agree with Willimo totally. Respect eachother. Besides that, lots of people that are participating here are writing english better by the day (me including ) I'm not going to apologize for my bad english here and there. I'm not blaming anyone else for the same thing as well.

Re: Split: Posting Standards

Just a point of clarification, for ywwong, slk320, and Bas Carwash: the issue is not the occasional mistakes in spelling or grammar from people on the boards (everyone makes mistakes typing, I know I do for sure!). Teh ishoo iz d ppl who typ liek dis n think its ok n get mad a t u when u c it and tell them 2 typ bettar bc we all no it iz there rite 2 typ how they want if u dont beleve me it iz in teh constitution right there the 2nd amendment thnk u//

Of course, that is a bit of hyperbole, but that's the idea. It's not the occasional mistakes, is the brazen abuse of the language.
