Exclamation '90 Cherokee - "The Sky is Falling"

Hey,

This summer the upholestry(?) on the roof of my interior started hanging down in a few bubbles. Now they're big bubbles... The interior is in great shape otherwise and its pretty unsightly.

I was thinking about poking a few small holes in it and spraying some fabric glue up inside. Any comments, concerns, or IDEAS?

This happens with all of these types of fabric headliner. The foam backing is breaking down. Spraying clue can help a bit but its a bit like trying to glue cloth to a sand castle.

The local auto trim shops around here can recover my existing Jeep headliner with new cloth and foam for $100 if I re and re the headliner.

I have an 89 and decided I would try to replace the headliner myself. The principle is simple, remove the whole thing from the roof and sweep all the old foam off then spray the glue on it and stick the new stuff on and smooth it out. That is the way it works in most vehicles, but mine had a big piece of thick fiberglass junk up there rather than a stiff board to glue to. It fell back down within a few days. I'd say get a pro to do it with a warranty.

Re: '90 Cherokee - "The Sky is Falling"

I've replaced three Cherokee headliners, and there are only a couple of tricks:

1. Get the heavy duty headliner spray glue from the parts store. If it costs less than 7 bucks a can it's crap.

2. Use a stiff brush to remove all the loose headliner material from the backer board before you put the new one on.

You can find suitable material (just about any kind you like will work) from Wal-Mart in the fabric dept. The 60" width is more than enough to fit. My oldest replacement has been up for 2+ years without sagging or bubbles.

lol... When mine fell down I started wearing a baseball cap to stop it from rubbing on my head. Eventually, I pulled it all off. Still haven't replaced the material.

Do you have a leak in your roof somewhere.

i just replaced mine, have never done a headliner before! 8.00 for a can of glue, 10.00 for gray felt fabric from the fabric store. very easy, hint get an extra pair of hands to help you hold it up while you start putting the trim pieces back up! take your time, and be careful with the board, it is a pressed fiber material and can rip/tear. good luck and try it, save yourself 200.00 and do it yourself.

So I must be missing something. Haven't looked that closely, but how do you remove the overhead compartment thingy? It must have some screws holding it up, but they do not appear to be readily accessible - or are they inside? Do you just remove the trim and slide the head board out? What about wiring for dome lights, compass, etc.?
