2004 Rear axle codes?

I am shopping for used 2004 Expeditions. Since we plan to tow stuff with it, I am checking on the rear axle ratios. But, the sales guys do typically do not know how to read the codes on the options lable on the driver's dor jam.

So, I think I have it figured out....how close am I?

All 2004's have a final drive ratio of 3.73

Most diffs are open and will have a rear axle code of "X 16"

The optional limited slip rear diff will have a colde of "HX6"

How am I doing so far?

If I am buying a 4x4, limited slip sounds important. An open diff will just spin in the mud. Comments?

Thanks for all your help folks. - Bradley

The numbers you've posted are correct as far as i know, they should all have the 3.73 axles which in my opinion makes the best axle ratio for towing. With 4x4 you don't have to worry much about a limited slip when towing, but i like to suggest it anyways just because that extra whell turning at 30% power can save you in a slippery spot. So yes, buy the limited slip axle!

You're right that the sales guys don't know how to read the codes cuz i'm a sales guy and i don't know the codes! But i worked for the #1 truck dealer for Ford Canada for 2 years, so i know lots about towing and such.

As far as knowing by the codes, running the VIN number will tell you, and the service department at the Ford dealer should be able to tell you aswell.

Good luck and enjoy your new Expedition!!
