Speedometer Problems

My speedometer went out several times in my toyota. The orginional part lasted 9-10 year and was made of metal. The last two (each replaced in the last two years) are made of plastic parts, and only last 6-12 months.

Is there anything I can do to make these parts last longer?

Is there anyway to find one with metal parts?
