Ok guys here is one for you. i have a 96 chevy 1500 305 vortex 175000. it will not start. it was running fine till one day last week i got in it and it took forever to start, but it did finally start. then i drove home. the next morning it started fine, drove to work and when i went to leave work it took forever to start. ran kinda crappy on the way home but still got me there. the next morning i got in it and it would just trun over and over but not start and it hasn't started since. it will sputter everyonce and a while when i stop turning the key but will not start.
i have tried a couple things to fix it. first thought was a control module. i replaced that and still nothing. second thought was a fuel pump because i realized that i was getting fire to the pulgs. replaced the fuel pump (even though i could hear the old one come on when i turned the key over.) then i was stumped. i then took it to pepboys and they told me that they think it had jumped time and the timing chain needed to be replaced. so i took it apart and the timing was perfect. #1 cylender up while marks on gears lined up. so that rules out the timing idea. then i thought maybe a fouled spark plug. i replaced all the plugs. all smelled like fuel when i pulled them out. after i got eveything back together i tried it again and nothing. any advice / tips directions on where to go from here would be wonderful. |

Re: 96 Chevy 1500 Will Not Start.
Fuel pressure regulator, bad intake gaskets, fuel pump pressure or pump itself, fuel filter, and last(probably the cheapest) the cap and rotor are prone to going out without warning at that many miles. Hope this helps -Chris

Re: 96 Chevy 1500 Will Not Start.
You mentioned that you have spark. Is this at the plugs? the coil? Where?
Did you check the fuel pressure at the schrader? You could have nothing more than a plugged up fuel filter. |

Re: 96 Chevy 1500 Will Not Start.

Re: 96 Chevy 1500 Will Not Start.
that's what it is supposed to do. You should have spark at ALL cylinders, not just 1,2,&5. Try new AC Delco plugs, cap and rotor. Any SES light?

I am having almost the exact same problem with my 1990 silverado 350ci (approx 60k miles on rebuilt engine) perhaps some of the things i tried can help you, and hopefully someone can give me a pointer or two...
I had drove it home from work - perfectly fine - one night, and the next morning i went out to leave and it would turn and turn but never fire AT ALL.... i removed my air cleaner and looked into the intake and i was getting no fuel from the fuel injectors, so initially i assumed fuel pump... so i purchased a fuel pump, but a couple days later i went to test something and it fired up immediately and ran PERFECT! i continued to drive it for about 3 more days, and it started running rough, so i thought maybe i should go ahead and replace my fuel filter.... it ran good again, until yesterday while on my way to my dads house, it began running rough again, and finally DIED as i was pulling into a convenience market to check things out. wouldnt start - no fuel coming thru injectors yet again! it spent last night at the store, and this evening i went to mess with it, and turned it over and it fired up again, but was still running rough, so i tried to get it to my dads (5 miles down the road) it didnt make it 1/8th a mile before dieing again. this time its spending the night at a grocery store parking lot (a bit of frustration at the moment....) today it acted like it wanted to run, but just wasnt firing on all cylenders. i had the same problem with a S10 once, so i did an electrical tune up - replaced the plugs, plug wires, dist. cap, and button but still, same exact problem (although that old distributor DID need replacing.....) when looking at the injectors (cant look too close, had a couple flame-ups, almost lost eyebrows!) it doesnt really look like i'm getting a good even spray.... it even looks like its sputtering some... with all that said, is it still possible that i'm looking at a fuel pump problem? (remember, on at least 2 occasions, i wasnt getting ANY fuel at all from the injectors) clogged fuel injectors? this all began to happen after a fill-up at a gas station, bad gas? still wouldnt explain the no-fuel problem... i thought even possible timing chain jump too but again, that STILL doesnt explain the no fuel thing.... again what i HAVE done is: replaced fuel filter replaced spark plugs, wires, dist cap, button kicked fender & gritted my teeth some |

Re: 96 Chevy 1500 Will Not Start.
now that the kicking the fender stuff has passed, change your ignition module, and see what happens.
happy motoring |
