Someone please help me!
I hope someone out there can help. I have a 98 GTP and I am Having all kinds of problems that I believe to possibly have one symptom. While driving about 70 mph the RPM gauge will drop to zero. Now sometimes if I catch it just right I can open up the throttle and it will jump back up to about 2000-2500 RPMs. If not then I have to pull over and restart it (this sometimes can take several tries). Also my TCS will go from on to off and stay stuck like that until I shut the car off and restart it.
Next there are times that I will be unable to start it Sometimes this will go on for days if not weeks at a time. It cranks but does not want to crank over. This is a intermittant problem and there is never a SES light. I have an hand held OBD2 reader and all checks come back as pass no codes returned. I was thinking (from other posts) that it could be the CPS. Can any one give my some ideas please?

Re: Someone please help me!
Almost definitely the CPS. This is a very common complaint.

The car should run so get it to a shop and It is highly recommended that you use anti-seize lubricant on the crankshaft before hub/blancer installation.

No problem... If it will start, you should be ok to drive it to the garage. The case learn will work assuming the CPS is not defective. I agree with Big-L, this is probably the best first step. If that doesn't work, the sensor will likely have to be replaced. You can do it, but it's really not a typical do-it-yourself job. Let us know what you find out..

Here are some instructions that will help you get to the sensor.I found this from a cam installation
Have to remove the belts and you should know how to remove the wheel so I'm not going to cover that! First thing, we will be removing the crankshaft pulley. First, we need to remove the bolt that is in the center of the pulley. Mine was on VERY tight and I had to use a newly rebuilt, VERY POWERFUL, impact to take it off. Even then, it was a struggle. The picture below shows the bolt already removed and sitting on the passenger side strut tower. It is the large one with some orange on it. The passenger side strut tower with the crankshaft dampener bolt sitting on top. Now to remove the pulley itself. For this, we will be needing another J-Tool. This is a pulley puller that is made specifically for removing the crank pulley. Do not try to use a supercharger pulley puller! It will not work. The pulley puller, as shown in the picture below, has three small bolts that go through the crank pulley and screw in to a piece deep within the engine. The larger bolt is what is used to pull the pulley off and it goes through the puller and into the place where you just removed the large crank pulley bolt. On the puller tool, you will also notice a small tab that sticks up. This needs to be lined up with a small slot that is on the pulley. After that is lined up, put the three small bolts on and tighten them down. Then put the larger bolt in and tighten it down until the pulley is pulled off. Note: When removing the crankshaft dampener it may be necessary to use some kind of flywheel tool to keep the engine from turning while removing the dampener bolt (the big bolt in the middle of the pulley). The crankshaft dampener puller tool (J-38197-2) After you get the dampener off you will see the CPS,just remember that this was taken from another set of instructions so I tried to get the info that might help you out and here is a pic of the CPS.If I missed anything I hope others will add to what I may have missed...good luck! ~Larry~ CPS
