Deciding on a Tsi

Ok I wouldn't really know too much about performance since I haven't drove many cars, but I'm at the point to start looking at first cars after i get my license, and my mind is 95% set at the Talons/Eclipses. Since no one seems to sell the Mitsubishi's around here, I've been looking at Eagles since they are cheaper anyway.

There aren't any performance differences between the Eagle and Mitsubishi's are there?

I'm pretty sure I'll be buying a Talon Tsi AWD.. I've been looking at a 1995.. but will probably be sold by the time I get my license, hopefully there'l be another.

But mainly.. what makes the auto's so bad. This'll be my first car so I'd be rusty for a while on a manual anyway, but is the slush box really that bad? I can still make fun of my friend's civic anyway so it's all good.

All the performance parts for the GSX's can be fitted onto the TSi's right?

How much will i be astounded when i buy the Tsi.. I've been driving on my temps with my sister's Geo Prizm (105 hp or something?) and it's a car.. it's fun, but doesn't have much punch. There's nothing wrong with having a turbocharged first car is there?

(and to think I had my mind set on a Civic DX a month ago.. pshhh!)

I would never give my kid a turbo DSM for a first car. If you get one, and don't kill yourself, consider yourself lucky.

They are the same car, yes... everything is the same performance wise. Don't get an auto because you will want a 5 speed after a month of driving. Just learn it now and be happy.

just dont get carried away with it. if u beat your friend in his civic dont go off thinkin u can beat any car in your town. u need to know ur limits.

yeah Im pretty responsible with anything I own.. but yeah, like JoeWagon said ^, my dad's still on the nervous side of letting me get a turbocharged car.

Besides, if I actually learned to get a Manual, I'd be racing that thing every night. I just want a fast auto to have some fun with.

The insurance might also be an issue. It's gonna be a bit higher than owning an underpowered civic :\

hmmph. Im stumped. 205hp is pretty quick for a first car. The main reason I suggest myself to buy it, is I'll probably have the car all the way thru college if it lasts, and I don't want to be stuck with a 1995 Saturn for 6 years.

Now one of my other friend's owning a 205hp car would be like lunging him into the pits of fire.. his dad gets like 3 speeding tickets a month, and he is just as careless when it comes to anything expensive. :o

well my first car was a 1984 monte carlo. was a v8 rear wheel drive fun car but i wanted something better on gas so i got a z-24 cavalier v6 5speed but i totaled that and got this talon i got now its alot faster than my cavalier but beleive me a turbocharged car is too much for a new driver especially if its a 5 speed u would either total the car or lose your liscense for wreckless or too many speeding tickets cause its a turbo!!

My dad kept the monte and its stricly a quarter mile car now runs high 11's low 12's!!! thats good for a 350 small block..

Hmm.. i do like the designing of the 1998 Eclipse GS i was looking at better than the 95 Talon.. but giving up 65hp is a hard bargain..

I dunno.. what's 140hp for a first car.. will the car still be pretty fun?

And what kind of upgrades will give power. I heard putting a cold air intake, cat back, and better headers will only give like 10hp :|

yes, of course that car will be fun as long as its a 5speed, but if its auto it will be fun but not as much fun as the 5 speed. just remember its ur first car dont beat on it to bad.

I spent my first 2 years of driving on a 97' eclipse RS. It was definitely a good first car, seeing as how it wasn't really fast but it still retained that sporty look. Now that I've grown up a little bit and matured some (at least I think I have ), I have upgraded to a GSX. I think if I had a GSX/GST/TSi when I first started driving at 16, I'd probably have 2-3 wrecks and quite a few speeding tickets on my driving record right now. However, there are a few kids out there that are mature enough and good enough drivers to handle it and not get too carried away. If you trust yourself and think you're mature/responsible enough, then definitely go for the TSi! But I'd suggest going with a non-turbo model eclipse/talon for your first two years of driving. Just my 2 cents.

I think im set for now.. insurance will be lower on a lower model and I'll save money to rattle the car apart with a new stereo of course

I can see where everyone's coming. I'll take a RS/GS model with low milage and save my money up in college so i can eventually get the GSX.. Usually if I want something bad enough I'll work my ass off all summer for it, woo, it'll be my goal in between classes.. woo.. im set for now.

I have a GS, and i can still be most of my friends pre-99 civic and a couple 4 door accords. its still fun at like 6500 RPM's.

I'm not much of a racing person.. I was just considering the TSi because all the power and fun.. but I guess a GS can be just as fun and won't get me in trouble as easily sooo. I guess I can always wait it out and see what happens.. ask around. I could always test drive it to see myself whether or not I'll get killed.. but Ill prolly go with the GS
