Fyi!!

This may help some of you out. A few months ago I changed the alternator out in my 86 SE....well once I got it in, it never started again till today. I took the supposedly good alternator back to the store to have them test it, they said it was bad....this is actually the 3rd one I've bought there that was not good right out of the box. The store didn't have another one, so I went to a different one that did....I had them test it before i traded...it also tested bad. Went to another store, they also had one and it tested bad. Got my money back and went somewhere else and got one that tested good. Put it in and still no dice. Come to find out, the bad alternator blew my Spark Control Module, ECM, radio, battery, and several fuses....this is all I've found so far, but now the car runs. Apparently the company that rebuilds the alternators claims that they do not cover any "consequential damages due to a defective alternator" that they say was good when it left their factory. Lesson learned - ALWAYS have the store test the part before you buy it!!!

Re: Fyi!!

Very interesting. Personally, I have never had a bad rebuilt alternator. I have also rebuilt many GM alternators. Since the complicated voltage regulator and diode trio are non-serviceable units that are just replaced, there really is not much that can go wrong, if the correct new parts are used and ita assembled correctly.
Perhaps the same shady rebuilder is supplying various auto parts places where you live.
