Avoiding dry start after oil change

Since you can't fill the oil filter with oil when installing a new one, does anyone know how to disable the ignition without harming the computer so that you can spin the engine over to develop oil pressure before starting the car? I have an 01 ZX3 w/Zetec engine.

hit the fuel cut-off switch. it's under the passenger side kick panel.

but you really don't need to worry about it unless the car has been sitting a long time. there will be enough oil left coating the internals for that brief period of time before oil is recirculated.

Inside the black Fuse Box that is located in the Engine Compartment (fire wall-driver side), you can unplug the F12 fuse (the one withe the gas pump picture), then turn on the engine until it dies (after two to four seconds, because some gas and pressure is remaining in the fuel system).
If you want you can pour some oil in the new oil filter, not too much, just about the 30-40% of the oil filter capacity.
Then when you have installed the new oil filter and poured the fresh oil, try to start the engine 5 or 6 times for about 3 or 4 seconds each time, after that you will see the oil pressure light will turn off.
Then install the F12 fuse and turn on the engine.
I use this procedure every time I change the oil on my car, because I try to avoid the like "diesel engine sound" that the engine makes for about two seconds until the oil pump fills the filter and develops the enough pressure.

It's not a bad idea, and real easy on a SPI. Just unplug the connector on the coil.

Juancamaney-You must be using an oil filter other then Motorcraft. With this type of filter you can't put any oil in it before you put it on. I've gotten over 300K miles out of each of my last four cars by priming them before starting and I want to do the same with this car. Thanks for the info.

I have used Mobil One in my ZX3 since the car was new. It's expensive but worth the piece of mind when I am driving the car hard. My car has 38k and uses no oil between changes.

I think the fact that you keep the oil changed on a regular basis has more to do with longevity then priming the engine, 97tbird.
