What do u guys think???????????????HELP HELP

I am about to buy a 1997 3000GT VR-4, it got 65K miles on it. The car looks and drives like it is in good condition and the owner is a 60 year old cop and his the first owner. He has not done the 60K mile tune-up
1.what is a good price for this car?
2.how much dose it cost to Tune the car at the dealer?
3.also the car did not feel like it was going at 12psi it kind feel like it only went to 7 or 8 psi. It was hot day when i drove it (87)is it because it is hot or what is it??
4.Where should i look for any problems that it is common??

Thank You

1. You can go to www.kbb.com and get what they have as the going rate. Off the top of my head, I think you'll be in the 15K area.

2. A tune up at the dearship is in the 1500 range (you definately want to get this done ASAP). That timing belt shouldn't be pushed further then recommended.

3. The boost guage in the car is not reliable. It should be putting out 12psi stock, but anything is possible. If you plan on putting in a boost controller, you'll want to get a good guage and see what you're really running.

4. The most notorous problem with these cars is the syncros in the transmission. Drive the car and shift hard all the way through the gears. You shouldn't feel or hear any griding (assuming you shift properly). If you do, you may be seeing the signs of the transmission starting to fail. And, like any other car, look at where he kept the car and see if you see any oil spots, push all the buttons, flip all the levers and turn every dial.

Good fortune

1. around 15K
2. about 1K with parts and labo
3. get an aftermarket boost gauge and check, if your not boosting 12 psi, its either #1 fault boost solenoid, or #2 boost leak
4. transfer case and synchros, luckily transfer cas is under a recall

Young can help u out with syncros if they are bad. I've got a bad 2nd gear syncro but it's not anything i'm worried about fixxing right away...anything goes wrong with the car, 100$ for me so i don't care what happens. 2nd of all...i'm sure the turbo boost was fine, u might just be expecting too much out of it. If ur hearing the turbos spool up and the guage was holding, (even the stock guage) i'm sure they will be fine. I would also stress to get that service done when/if u get the car asap. For a price, I'd suggest about 17 - 20k with that mileage and NO 60k service yet. Be sure to emphasize on him not doing the service to try for a price drop, good luck and i hope u get it and it runs fine.

Re: What do u guys think???????????????HELP HELP

youngvr4 is a member on this board, who I believe just replaced his synchros. You can get replacement synchros individually for a couple hundred a piece. Many dealerships/incompetant mechanics will try and tell you that you need a new tranny($3,000), but they are wrong. 99% of the time it's just the synchros.
With that low mileage, I wouldn't really worry about worn valve guides...but just make sure you aren't getting any blue smoke out of the exhaust.
Another common problem, but one that is cheap to fix, is a malfunction with the active spoiler on the back, but I think you said you are looking at a 97, and I don't even think they had the moving spoilers...so ignore that.

That's pretty much it, the rest of the info the other guys gave you is good. The 60k tuneup will cost a grand to $1500, so definantly try and talk the seller down. Good luck.

Consumer Rated Condition: Good
"Good" condition means that the vehicle is free of any major defects. The paint, body and interior have only minor (if any) blemishes, and there are no major mechanical problems. In states where rust is a problem, this should be very minimal, and a deduction should be made to correct it. The tires match and have substantial tread wear left. A clean title history is assumed. A "good" vehicle will need some reconditioning to be sold at retail; however major reconditioning should be deducted from the value. Most recent model cars owned by consumers fall into this category.

Private Party Value Search Local Listings for This Car $15,255
Private Party value represents what you might expect to pay for a used car when purchasing from a private party. It may also represent the value you might expect to receive when selling your own used car to another private party.
