Question 98 Accord, 161,000mi and 2 new noises!

Alright, just looking to see if anyone has a quick fix before I go replacing things. My accord has a 4banger VTEC engine that has been properly maintained (with the exception of overpriced struts) and runs strong, however last time I drove it is made two obviously unnatural sounds.

The first is a low moaning of constant pitch and volume when I turn the wheel to the left at any considerable speed. I first thought "power steering" but the belt looks good and the fluid is at proper level (though dark in color). The odd thing is that it only happens when turning left...

Secondly, when I was driving I noticed a whine, much like the high speed whine of a turbocharger (though obviously the car is NA). The pitch and intensity increase with RPMs and do not change with speed or any accessory on or off. (I'm thinking alternator but that's just a guess)

That's it, if you need any more info to make a diagnosis just ask.
Thanks for your time guys.

For the first problem check your CV joint boots...they are most likely torn and the grease that is packed in them is coming out or road grime is getting in...hopefully you can just buy a boot and repack them but you may have to have the CV joint replaced which isn't horribly expensive...if the noise is on left turns i would check the left inner boot...where the axle connects to the transmission...My 5thgen was doing this on right turns, i had a torn boot that eventually messed up the CV joint and i ended up replacing both right side boots, cv joints and the axle.

<sigh> Thanks for the post, I was sure I was just going to get a reply that said "that must be your power steering!" The CV joint sounds credible and I never even would have looked at it. Thanks again!
