2000 Vw Golf Gl Tdi Wont Start
HELP....... Today I removed the instrument panel from my 2000 Golf GL diesel to clean up some scratches and now the car will not start. I disconnected both cables from the rear of the instrument panel and reconnected them and now when I go to start the car it tries to start, but just dies. There car/and Key light now shows on the dash, so I,m guessing that it has something to do with the transponder key code. Can anyone tell me what I have to do to get this car running again. Anu help would be greatly appreciated

Re: 2000 Vw Golf Gl Tdi Wont Start
When removing the instrument cluster you affect the link between the immobilizer & the ECM. When installing a new cluster they have to be re-coded, I was unaware that even whenthe same cluster was put back in that you could have similar problems. I've not had much experience w/this system. The only thing you may try is to disconnect the battery then reconnect. I've seen some reference to turning the key to on position & waiting a few minutes befor trying to start. Otherwise you will need to have VW or someone with a VAG-COM check out what the problem with the immobilizer is.

Hi, I am having a problem with a TDI also. Did you resolve your start problem?
Mine hits once then returns to cranking with no start. Any ideas? Cliff |

Diesel fever-your problem sounds like an immobliser fault, this can happen if you've dropped your key on the ground, the immobiliser can't read the key, like boschmann says-take it somewhere where the technicians can look for fault codes via vag-com or a VAS machine.let us know how you get on.

Hi,
I have a very similar problem with my Golf (GT TDI, 2000 115bhp, Same as Shufy). A few weeks ago I had an accident, a side collision. The Site engineer at our local Bus Depot drove his Astra into my back door / pannel, passenger side - as I was driving past the bus depot on my from some early xmas shopping. I was able to drive some of the way home, but just then the Traction control and Airbag warning lights came on (and stayed on)...the car then began to switch off all the lights in a sort of a shutdown sequence way. I stopped the car and the engine cut off. The engine failed to restart, so I called the auto rescue service to get me home. I contacted my insurance and they arranged repairs to be done by a local garage/ bodywork specialist. On the 22nd Dec i went to pick up the car, it would'nt start, the garage told me to come in the next day, 23rd Dec - On my way home the same two lights came on, so i headed to the local VW Dealer. They diagnosed the car and found that the brakelight switch needed to be replaced_which the promptly did. The next day the car would not start, I got the the AA to get me to the VW garage. They put the car under diagnostics and could not find anything wrong. They recharged the battery and advised that i bring the car back on Wednesday 29 Dec shoud i encounter any further problems. At peresent: 1. The modern day Herbert (East Anglian, UK name for a Beetle) still wont start, the battery just sort of dies. 2. Upon a jump start , the car runs for a bit and the same sequence occurs gain, ending in the car not restarting. 3. The insurance company is claiming the accident was not the cause for the above problems One thing I have noted, is that the battery light does not light up when I turn on the ignition. Even when the battery is being charged. Could you please help!!!! In the mean time , I hope you guys are enjoying the festive cheer and good spirits_know what i mean. 1 |

If your car starts and runs for 1-2 seconds than dies- you need to have the keys re-programmed to the instrument cluster at a dealership . I havent seen a problem though with just disconnecting and reconnecting the instrument cluster (if its the same one) and then the car not starting.
