Wipers

My right wiper is working fine, but the other one isn't working properly, moves very slowly and gets caught under the other one. For now, I have pulled it over to the far side of the passenger side and hung it over the mirror and it stays there. Do I need to replace a motor or what? I have a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP.

Re: Wipers

May want to pull the arm off and look where it fastens. The motor runs both wipers. Can't see how it would mess up on one an not the other. May also want to check at the motor for the bar the works that wiper.

Re: Wipers

I know they had a re-call out on wipers for the Grand Prix, but off the top of my head I dont remember what years it was...might wanrt to do a search on re-calls for the Grand Prix.

Try taking off the cap at the end of the wiper, and tightening the bolt under it. I was having the same problem, and that has worked fine for me.

Re: Wipers

I've already asked about it but, what are the specific steps to removing the windshield wipers, because i tried to and they wouldn't come out as if they were still attached or jammed tight.

Re: Wipers

Thank you for the suggestions.

I did try to take off the cap at the end of the wiper arm and to tighten it. That doesn’t seem to make any difference. The driver side arm can still be moved very easily and has just a little resistance which appears to match how slowly it was turning. The passenger side arm won’t move at all (though it would probably if I were to force it). It’s almost like the motor is working perhaps but there is something that the driver side arm should be using to hold on to the motor, but is not.

I have a 97 GP GT and my wipers were repaired via a recall, not sure about other years.

Re: Wipers

Thanks. Is there a place to see the list of recalls?

You can call your local Pontiac dealership and they can give you any recall info, what year, etc.

Re: Wipers

if it's not covered under the recall, your wiper transmission is broke. Its a relay rod that connects the pass side to the drivers side so the wipers move together. GM part is#12363303 and should run less than $90 at the dealer. I work at an AC-Delco distributor in Flint, MI and could ship it via Ups for $49.99 plus shipping. Let me know.

Re: Wipers

Rich and Jon,
Thanks for the info.

Rich, what you say makes sense since it does act like the way a burned out clutch does on a stick shift. That must be it. But then again, maybe not since it turns easily on the nut, I think. Hmmm... I need to check that again.

Re: Wipers

Okay... I just went outside and checked again. The wiper arm is connected to the rest of the car by a nut and bolt. If I undo the nut and look, the arm swings - with just the slightest bit of resistance - without the bolt turning at all. So it's the connection between the arm and the bolt, as if the grooves are worn inside the arm itself. Note that this happens even if the nut is still on as well.

Re: Wipers

then maybe your arm is worn out. Take the arm off, and then try the wipers. IF the shaft moves in sync with the drivers side, then you need to replace the passenger side arm. The arm is dealer only, part#10300573 ($25), or may be available thru HELP! or Dorman at Zone, Advance, etc...

Re: Wipers

Rich,
You're quite right. I did that. The shaft did move in sync. Just for kicks, I held the shift in between my index finger and thumb to see if there was any real torque behind it and it kept on moving. So turning movement of the shaft itself appears to be strong.

Is there some Ninja trick to getting the arm off? I wasn't able to do that and observed all of this just by removing the nut again.
