Unhappy Panda vs Z06... kinda sorta...

Gah, No Corvette will race me (just haven't found one yet)... except this guy.

And this particular race wasn't really a race...

Allow me to explain.

I left a local HondaTech meet in Huntington Beach kinda pissed, cause when I left the car totally would not shift to 2nd gear. It was as if it was non-existant. Which made me look like a total newb. Albeit me being not used to the car yet played a factor into it, but it felt like a mechanical 'jam'.

Anywho, after riding the limiter for a few seconds. I let off... just go straight to 3rd and just drive normally. Me and my buddy were like "wtf happened?". So we're cruising, make a quick stop by our local hangout looking for a buddy of ours, He's no where to be seen.

So I figure I'll take the coast route home, but upon reaching the signal. I see a Corvette turning left onto the street I'd normally take (the non coast route).

Me: Nevermind, we'll turn right.
Jason: Ah the Corvette.
Me: Lets hope.

I take the right at the signal instead of going straight down the road to the coast, and a few moments later here comes the Vette. It's a dark blue Z06 with a middle aged man on the phone. I was kinda dissapointed that he was on the phone. But his Z06 sounded awesome, had aftermarket exhaust for sure. What kind? No clue, but it was music to my ears.

A few lights down the way, we catch a red light. He gets off the phone. I blipped the throttle to get his attention, he looks over and I point forward and nod my head toward the empty road.

He smiled and laughed, and declined. I laughed too, and I motioned that it was cool.

Light goes green, and I take off normally and shift to 2nd gear.

Jason: I'm so expecting him to fly past you.
Me: Yeah, seriously.

Z06 Driver:WAHHHHH!!

When he got on it, it scared me... his car was so fucking loud.

But, I mashed the pedal in 2nd gear. Boost hit instantly, and I stopped his charge immediately. The car didn't spin or anything, probably because I had a passenger? haha.. no clue but she hooked. The car kinda torqued over to the left and towards his lane. I shifted into 3rd gear with a flawless shift which suprised me. Revs hardly dropped... and we pulled like a sumbitch!

I let off, me and my buddy were like "Holy shit..."

The Z06 comes up behind me, and comes to my right. His window comes down...

Z06 Driver: You've got a quick car! Very nice!
Jason: You too!
Me: Thanks, your car is awesome!
Z06 Driver: Thanks!

We exchange thumbs ups and waves. And he turns off onto a residential side street.

Then we did realised I was only boosting 10psi. But because of what we now think is a bad wastegate, it would spike to 14psi but fall back to 10psi.

When we found this out, our faces were both:

I cannot wait to run a Vette for reals... each time it gets closer. Maybe next time?

Nice race man, sounds friggen awesome.

Have you ever been to San Clemente near San Diego? I will be down there this winter, and I got a buddy with a Z06, I'll see if we could set something up so we could meet and you could get a real race. Not positive, but I should be heading down there near early December.

Nice, like I've been telling my friends.

I have doubts I'd be able to kill a Z06 with a competant driver behind the wheel, Had this guy been out for 'blood' so-to-speak. I think he would of skated right past me, but I would of been giving him a run for his money.

Right till I hit the stock 125mph speed limiter of the SR20 ecu.

Gotta get that removed...

Honestly though, Z06s have the potiential to be a 12 second car with a good driver. I have my doubts. But you never know, I'll definately think about it though!

PM me if you get any info or something.

Just called him to tell him the good news, (that being that he has someone to race against)....Says he traded it in a few months back.

He says he has a 310 HP RX-7 right now (1996). Says he would be glad to race you, but wants to wait till I come down. He got slammed pretty hard by the local bacon down there and is coolin' down for awhile. I'll let you know if anything turns up.

Boo... no Z06? Ah well, life is life. A FD3S Rx-7? Nice... that seems a bit more my pace. (probably not) But I'd give it ago!

I dunno, it was a freak thing. But it hasn't done it sence. It was like somebody just deleted 2nd gear.

Re: Panda vs Z06... kinda sorta...

Good run. Z06's are monsters. Unfortunately alot of the drivers are not exactly too skilled. Don't feel like a newb with your car not allowing you to go into second. I just had a run with Danno at California overcrowded Speedway (We could only get one run in btw). I went for second and it wouldn't let me go.... period...... That blew my only chance for revenge at the track. We did run from a roll though, and I faired much better. We only got 2 runs in at Speedway. I don't think i'll be going there again (2 runs took about 5 1/2 hours).

Re: Panda vs Z06... kinda sorta...

Nice job. I think the new z06 vettes will run mid 12s with good drivers. Not sure whether the one you kinda-raced was a new one or not.

Very sexy car you're got there, redneck. I was thinking about an sr20 240z or 510 at some point (the only way to have a smog legal sr20 in cali is to stick it into an old car, I think.)

It was definately a 2002+ Z06, it had the 405hp badge on the fender. I sat looking at it at the light...
