well guys, last weekend i was fuckin around and i had a boost spike of 27psi... the vacuum hose blew off the wastegate on my 16g and right when i saw the gauge at 27psi, i looked over at the AFC and saw knock so i let off, well it wasnt soon enough... the rod bearings spun, every one of them
plus i was getting blow by and it was pissing me off cause everytime i got on it i could here the dip stick hit the hood... well i decided to rebuild the 6 bolt motor just for fun with a different crank and rods (from spare motor)... pulled the motor monday night / tuesday morning at 3am, everything out by 7am when the parts store opened. got new bearings, rings, and all new gaskets for $173.25 (i got a really good deal, thats another reason i did it) and my buddy and i went to work on it, disassembled it and washed every fuckin part in hot soapy water and blew it off with the air compressor, wiped everything down with tranny fluid and started reassembly by 11am... everything went together good and had the short block assembled by 2pm (i even painted the block cast aluminum... looks kinda cool ). then on went the head, intake manifold, exhaust manifold and turbo (i got a small T-28 plus some other stuff like the intercooler, for free from a local junkyard for giving them a parts car i picked up and no longer needed). i put the T-28 on cause i dont care if i fuck that one up... i just dont want to ruin any other turbo! something tells me its goin to die anyways with metal shavings in the oil from break in!once the motor was all assembled i went thru and put in the oil, spun the oil pump sprocket with my drill to prime the pump, filter, and all the bearings so it wasnt all dry had everything back together and started the car at 10pm tuesday night and she purrs like a kitten on steroids now this question is for kevin... i have been told many ways to break the motor in, beat on it - dont beat on it... dont rev past 3k RPM, i also have heard start off in 1st, bring it to 4k let it drop to 2k then bring it back up to 4k and so on for the rings to seat good... so far i put 3 miles on it today, havent pushed it past 4k yet but i am so tempted, i know not to use the cruise but i was just wondering if you had any suggestions on break in processes? now here are some pics... my friend came to visit for the afternoon/night from chicago and brought his digital camera and just sent me the pics tonight... i wish i could have gotten pics of the disassembly and reassembly but he didnt get here until the after noon, we disassembled and reassembled the motor in my shop about 100 yards away (about 2 city blocks), and pulled the motor and put it back in at my buddies garage just cause napa is right next door and i wanted to keep my shop as clean as i could for the rebuild. well there is the finished product! ![]() and my dumbass with the motor, dirty as fuck! ![]() the process of dropping it in, it was a little tough with those stupid leveling bars that the cherry picker hooks too... with too much weight on the chains the leveler wont allow me to level the motor so we had to use our weight to get it to move! my buddy is standing on the leveler if you didnt know what it looks like... ![]() the motor in, just needed to be hooked up ![]() my new FMIC! its 45-1/2" wide x 16" tall x 2-1/2" thick, 4" inlet and outlet, i love it!![]() ![]() and the final project all done and over with at 9:45pm on 9-14-04 right before start up! ![]() ![]() and one more thing... i was driving my car tonight and went i got home i went and checked the oil and water and my manifold was glowing a good solid orange color... WTF is up with that, i have seen my turbo glow before from a trip but never the manifold, could this have to do with the small amount of shaft play in the T-28? it looked cool, i just have never seen anything like that before! |

Re: It runs again! :) (56k warning **pics**)
i see ya picked up on the timing belt, ya know whats really weird... the timing belt is glossy... its brand new, and it came nowhere near oil (i'm picky about those things)
as for the intercooler it came off a dodge turbo deisel... kevin probably has the same thing in his truck!

Nice intercooler, pretty big for a t28 . Are you going to put the 16g on it again? Is that the spyder you are planning to make AWD??

i plan on puting my other 20g that i have for it on once i get the motor good and broken in! just so i dont risk the chance at toasting the turbo. Last edited by EclipseRST; 09-17-2004 at 02:13 PM. |

Re: It runs again! :) (56k warning **pics**)
Every single time I had broken in a motor, mitsu rebuild or aftermarket, I lost hte turbo. Good move putting a junker on for now. This time I used only pure1 filters and have an AGP filter on the turbo feed line. The turbo has some slight shaft play, but I havent checked it since I installed it, so it could be just "broken in"
![]() For breakin, dont baby the car. But dont beat on it either. Let me try to explain. You need high cylinder pressure to drive the rings into the cross hatch to seat them before the cross hatch is gone. If you didnt hone this block, I'm not sure how this will play out though. I dont like to go to high rpm until the bearings have had some time to settle in, so I recomend high boost/low rpm. Run at least 15-16 psi, I use 20 since thats the lowest my setup will go. Get into boost, and then let off. On that turbo you should be able to let off by like 4k. Let the motor decel for a while to clear it out. And repeat. Once there are some miles on the car (~50?) start to raise rpm gradually, again, on boost. Work it up to 7000 by 100 miles perhaps. Change the oil at around 10 miles. Change it again between 50 and 100. Use mitsu or Pure1 filters, and change them as well. This is no time to be cheap! I've had great results doing this. PRevious motors would take several thousand miles to reach full compression. Motors broken in this way are up by 100 miles. My motor that I just wrecked had about 150 miles on it. The one good cylinder, #4, still has 200 psi compression, and my guage reads lower than most. IF youre on 1g pistons, look for 150-160 compression, 2g look for 170-180. Good luck.

I'm not sure what you mean get the head and block tuned for turbo. He put a 6 bolt motor in the car.
