Question 1998 chevy metro transmission noise

I just bought a 1998 metro with a 1.3L 5 speed 105,000 miles. While driving down the road and letting off the gas you can here a noise ,like somthing rubbing or a bearing making a grinding noise, when you hit the clutch the noise goes away. When I first test drove it the shift pattern was real stiff so I lubricated the linkage and it fixed that. Thanks for any help on this or any other problem these cars are pron to Steve

my 95 made a growling sound like yours with the clutch out. push the clutch in it would go away mine did it all the time sitting still on the road. it ended up being a bad bearing in the trans these transmissions aren't hard to take apart but definetely not for a novice.

i had trouble with the front seal rolling up when you put the case back together make sure you use a new seal with plenty of petroleum jelly on the input sshaft these seals are very fragile

Throwout bearing. Might as well replace the clutch while you're at it. A Metro clutch kit comes with a new throwout bearing. You should be able to do a clutch on the metro in a few hours. If you search the forums, there's directions on how to remove the transmission.

if its the clucth release bearing it will make noise with the clutch pedal pushed in. the "throwout bearing" should not be turning with the pedal out unless the clutch is adjusted too tight. the clutch fork pulls it away from the clutch disc.

mantrans.com best price I could find. What would be your advice for improving fuel economy ? I thought about water injection

Well, the best way to go about getting better fuel econony is to make the engine more efficient. Better exhaust, better intake, hotter spark, better spark plugs, smooth hubcaps. Water injection would work too, but you run the risk of hydro-lock in the motor.
