Front Main Seal + timing belt questions
I am working on a 1990 7m-ge. I have a couple questions.
#1, the timing belt sheared off a bunch of teeth while atempting to start after running fine. I have the belt off and and ready to put the new one on, but should I be worried about bent valves? I am under the impression that this is a non-interferance engine, meaning that even if the belt is off, the pistons would never hit the valves. Is this true? #2, I have always had a leak from the front of this motor. The parts explode diagram at the local Toyota dealer shows only a timing belt cover seal, and an oil pump seal, both of which are your standard round grease seals. I bought them both and plan on replacing them, but are those the only oil seals in the front of the engine? I replaced both of the cam seals already as well as the valve cover seals and they did not stop the leak. When I pulled off the crank shaft gear, which goes thru the timing belt cover seal, I expected oil to rush out, but it didn't. I feel like I am missing something. Throw me a bone here Toyota guys! Thanks Tom |

Re: Front Main Seal + timing belt questions
I have an 85 Supra and replaced the timing belt and the crankshaft seal yesterday. Other than the seals you mentioned, the crankshaft seal behind the timing belt sprocket is the only other one. I am not familiar with the possibility or the probability of the pistons hitting the valves. When you put it back together, check the compression pressure and you'll know if the valves were bent.

Re: Front Main Seal + timing belt questions
Yea, thats the seal I replaced. The one that goes over the snout of the crankshaft, behind the sproket, and the one for the oil pump, behind that sproket. I think the timing belt cover seal is behind that inside cover, but I didn't go that far. Hopefully I'm in business. Have most of it back together, just have to put the fan shroud, belts and hoses on tonight and see what happens. Compression check is a good idea! Not sure how good of compression it had before, but a bent valve would show REALLY bad compression.
Thanks Tom |

Re: Front Main Seal + timing belt questions
The engine that you are working on IS a NON INTERFERENCE ENGINE, the 7mge and gte have sixty thousands of clearance between the head and the piston crown. I'm just getting ready to put in my crankshaft seal now, the car is losing a quart of oil every 50 miles or so.......wish me luck..
